President Trump seeks special amnesty for three children

According to the New York Times, President Trump told some advisers that he was concerned that Biden’s Justice Department might seek retaliation by targeting his three oldest sons, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump, as well as his son-in-law Jared. Kushner, are currently senior advisers to the White House.

Donald Trump Jr. was considered by special counsel Robert Muller on relations with the Russian side when investigating Russian interference in the US elections in 2016. However, no allegations were made after the incident ended.

Donald Trump Jr was once investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for his dealings with the Russian side in connection with the destruction of information about Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign, but was not charged.

Meanwhile, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner once lied when he informed the federal government about his dealings with foreign representatives. This happened during Kushner’s background investigation to gain access to confidential information as the president’s senior adviser.

It’s unclear why Trump is concerned about legal moves targeting Eric Trump or Ivanka Trump. However, the Manhattan prosecutor’s investigation into the Trump Organization has revealed millions of dollars in taxes related to Ivanka.

Special amnesty orders to exempt future criminal charges from prosecution are not common, but there are many precedents from American presidents.

“The power of amnesty has been used by many presidents in ways that are politically beneficial to them, be it George HW Bush or Clinton,” said Jack L. Goldsmith, a professor at Harvard Law School. At the same time, he reiterated that President Bush pardoned six of his associates, including former Defense Minister Caspar W. Weinberger, for their role in the Iran-Contra incident.

However, a presidential pardon cannot protect a person from state or local crime investigations.

Furthermore, no president of the United States forgives anyone for crimes they have not yet committed, and legal experts say such an amnesty would not matter.
