Diego Maradona’s performance against England in the 1986 World Cup was seen as sweet retaliation after Argentina was defeated by England in the Falklands War four years earlier.
This is the trial of Asif Kapadia, director of the documentary on the mythical Diego Maradona, which premiered in the UK in 2019. It was the historic performance that helped Maradona be considered “God” for Argentines.
The legendary Maradona died on November 25, at age 60, of heart disease. It was the double of Argentina’s 2-1 victory over England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final match.
The first goal was clearly a situation where Maradona played the ball by hand, later known as the “hand of God.” The second goal was voted the “goal of the century” in 2002, when Maradona dribbled past five English players before dribbling the goalkeeper and finishing off the goal.
The victory over England in the quarterfinals helped Argentina advance to the next round and ultimately won the 1986 World Cup.
Beyond the professional aspect, Maradona’s two goals against the English team gave the Argentines the opportunity for “revenge.”
Just four years ago, Argentina and England were embroiled in a fierce war, vying for control of the Falklands. It is a chain of small islands located off the coast of Argentina, south of the Atlantic Ocean.
Maradona became an eternally adored monument in Argentina after the 1986 World Cup match against England.
Argentina was forced to surrender to England after 10 weeks of fighting. The war ended with 649 Argentine soldiers killed. British casualties were 255 soldiers. Britain maintains control of the Falklands to this day.
“Maradona is the greatest,” Kapadia replied in British media. “He is a footballer, his job is to score goals.”
“And it would be even more amazing if it were a goal that helped the national team beat a rival who beat their country in a war four years earlier, making him the best player in the world, scoring goals in controversial situations that are still recognized. Kapadia added.
“It is a measure to judge Maradona, he is a genius, a liar and a person who has a profound influence in the country of Argentina,” Kapadia added.
The Argentine warship was sunk by British submarines in the Battle of the Malvinas in 1982.
South American soccer expert Tim Vickery agreed: “Two winning goals against England that year put Maradona on par with ‘God’ at home.”
“The football game against England was a defining moment in Maradona’s life,” Vickery told Sky Sports. “That year’s match wouldn’t mean so much if the opponent wasn’t England, when the two countries went through a fierce war.”
“Argentina used to be an unofficial part of the British Empire. With Maradona’s achievement, Argentines can be proud that England, although very strong, is smarter and better than the British, ”said Vickery.
“With the first goal, Maradona sent a message to the Patriots, that ‘we are smarter than the British,'” explained Vickery. “With the second goal, Maradona could say ‘we are better than England'”.
“He became a living legend when he scored two goals against England. It was then that the Argentine people assumed that Maradona was not an ordinary person, he was comparable to ‘God’.
