Muslim Shahdan, a senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, was killed in a drone strike on the Syrian border.
Iraqi security sources said the attack on Shahdan’s convoy occurred on the night of November 28 or the morning of November 29, killing the commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and three men. net.
Two other Iraqi security officials said Shahdan’s car carried weapons and was attacked by an unmanned aircraft (UAV) after crossing the border from Iraq into Syrian territory. Neither party has been charged or claimed responsibility for the air strike.
The attack came shortly after Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was assassinated on November 27. Iran accused Israel of being behind the attack on Fakhrizadeh and its air strikes against Iranian forces or its Syrian-backed militias.
Israel and the United States accuse Iran and its militant groups of trying to smuggle weapons from Iraq to Syria and Lebanon. These weapons were later used by militia groups against Israel.
General Aviv Kochavi, commander of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), confirmed that the country did not abandon its campaign to prevent Iranian-backed militias from taking hold in Syria.
The IDF has deployed thousands of strikes against Iran-related weapons convoys and targets, Israeli officials said. However, Israel has carried out more unlikely attacks against the Iraqi-Syrian border.
Iran warned last week that it would seek to end Israel’s “stealth” incursions into Syria. This statement came after Israel launched a lightning strike in retaliation for “a failed Iranian explosive attack” against the country’s controlled Golan highlands.
Israel is silent after the death of Iranian expert Fakhrizadeh. The Israeli army and its diplomatic missions around the world are on high alert after Iran declared “brutal revenge” for Fakhrizadeh.
