Australia has asked China to apologize for posting a fake photo on the government’s Twitter account that shows an Australian soldier murdering an Afghan child.
Speaking on television, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Beijing should be “extremely embarrassed” for sharing a “disgusting” image.
The incident came amid growing political tensions between the two countries.
This image alludes to war crimes committed by some Australian soldiers.
Warning: stories contain hurtful images.
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Trieu Lap Kien posted an edited photo showing an Australian soldier holding a bloody knife next to a child. The baby is holding a sheep.
Australian station ABC reported that the images appear to allude to unfounded rumors that elite Australian soldiers killed two Afghan teenagers with knives. However, the investigation found no evidence to support this rumor.
The tweet read: “Shocked by the killing of Afghan civilians and prisoners by Australian soldiers. We strongly condemn such acts and hold them responsible.”
Mr. Morrison described the above post as “truly disgusting, deeply insulting, extremely inhumane.”
“The Chinese government should feel extremely humiliated by this publication,” he said.
Australia has also asked Twitter to remove the post from the platform, describing it as “distorted information”.
