Mr. Alan Phan, a 40-year-old Vietnamese, secretly donated sperm to those wishing to have children and signed up to donate at infertility clinics. This man is being investigated by the Victorian Reproduction Service (VARTA).

Many clinics reported to authorities that Mr. Phan voluntarily donated sperm through informal channels and may have more children than allowed. Under Victorian law, a man can only create 10 “families,” including his own children.

Mr. Phan said he found it difficult to deny women who want to have children and once donated 3 in just 1 day. “Initially, I only planned to donate nine times. Then I received a text message from a woman saying that the donation was successful and it became the 10th time. I thought, ‘Anyway, the limit is exceeded already, I will help more people’ and it goes on “- shared Mr. Phan. He is known to have his own family with 2 children.

The Vietnam-born man describes donating as his own hobby but a full-time job. You must abstain from sexual activity, exercise every day, and supplement a variety of vitamins to ensure healthy sperm. Mr. Phan claimed that he was the first Vietnamese to donate sperm in Australia and was sought after by many thanks to his ethnicity and success rate.

It is known that, in addition to registering to donate at clinics, Mr. Phan is also unofficially donating through an online group called Sperm Donation in Australia. Ms. Louise Johnson, a VARTA official, said they are investigating and should make sure no more children are born from Mr. Phan’s sperm. Thus, a patient in his late 40s cannot use an egg fertilized by Mr. Phan and suffers from severe depression.

According to Ms. Johnson, once the treating clinic knows that a donor has created more than 10 families, they cannot continue to use that person’s sperm. He said it was sad and innocent when Mr. Phan continued to donate sperm to many people despite the limit being exceeded and stressed the importance of donor sincerity when donating at a clinic.

A limit of 10 families is established to prevent babies born from this service from having more than one sibling living in the same community.
