Before that, on the morning of November 22, a group of 29 12th grade students majoring in Ly, Bac Kan High School for the Gifted held a picnic on Khau Mo Mountain, Huyen Tung Ward, Bac Kan City .
After climbing to the top of the mountain, because 2 students were showing signs of fatigue, they called to ask Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thai, physics teacher, secretary of the school delegation, to bring them back, 27 students remained in the mountain. At the end of the afternoon, due to fog and darkness, the children got lost in the forest and could not find their way back.
Upon receiving the news, the authorities mobilized forces, divided into numerous search parties in the mountainous area of Khau Mo (Huyen Tung neighborhood, Bac Kan city). At 9 pm the same day, the rescue team approached 27 students, checked their health, and decided to safely descend the mountain.
It is known that when they came down from the mountain, at first they did not go up the road, but followed the shortcut. However, it was getting dark fast and it was foggy so they got lost and lost. When the FPF and CNCH forces identified and approached the locations of 27 students, they were close to the direction of the Nam Cut hydroelectric power station (about 7 km from the foot of Khau Mo Mountain).
