Quang Tri: 4 deaths related to Whitmore disease

Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital recorded 30 cases of Whitmore disease

Especially since October 14, after the first flood occurred in Quang Tri until now, there are 24 people infected with Whitmore disease.

Out of 30 cases of “cannibal bacteria” infection, there were 4 deaths.

The first death of a patient related to Whitmore’s disease was Mr. NVB (SN 1969, resident of Hai An District, Hai Phong City). Mr. B is one of the crew members stranded on the Vietship 01 ship, which sank in the Quang Tri Sea from 8 to 11 October.

Mr. B had a blood test, diagnosed with Whitmore disease on October 14th.

The next 3 victims were HVV (SN 1945, resident of Le Commune, Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province), NTL (SN 1958, resident of Cam Hieu Commune, Cam Lo District, Quang Tri) and HCD (SN 1973, resident of Hai Commune) Lam, Hai Lang, Quang Tri).

Dr. Le Van Lam, Head of the Anti-Poison Intensive Resuscitation Department, Quang Tri Province General Hospital, said that each year the hospital records more than 10 cases of Whitmore’s disease, of which only about 1 / 10 of the patients die. death.

Particularly this year, after many back-to-back floods, the number of Whitmore cases spiked suddenly as the floods spread disease-causing bacteria to many locations.

According to Dr. Lam, the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei that causes Whitmore’s disease lives in the top layer of soil and water. As long as the human body is scratched, in contact with this bacteria, the bacteria will invade. “Cannibal” bacteria can penetrate almost every organ in the human body.

Whitmore patients do not present specific and specific clinical manifestations, making it difficult to detect and diagnose.

Dr. Lam said that deaths caused by Whitmore disease are mainly due to too late detection and a serious underlying disease.

To cure Whitmore’s disease, Dr. Lam said long-term treatment, which can last up to 6 months with strict therapy.

The most disturbing thing is that the manifestation of Whitmore’s disease is easily confused with common diseases such as pneumonia … The patient sees a cough, buys medicine, antibiotics for coughing and can take it for a while and then resort, if the owner is very dangerous to let the situation last.

To address Whitmore disease, on November 23, Quang Tri Province Health Department Director Do Van Hung requested the Provincial Center for Disease Control to intensify case investigation, assess epidemiological factors and analyze risk, formulate proactive plans, implement prevention and control of diseases in communities, especially in high-risk places and places with environmental contamination after storms and floods. The hospital takes samples to analyze suspicious and high-risk cases for early detection and aggressive treatment, minimizing death from Whitmore disease.

The clinical manifestations of various diseases include fever, with patterns such as fever or fever with chills, prolonged fever, respiratory failure, skin ulcers, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, liver abscess, spleen. , sepsis, multi-organ failure …

The Ministry of Health recommends people:

– Limit contact with soil or muddy water, especially in heavily polluted areas.

– Use shoes, shoes and gloves for people who usually work outdoors, in contact with dirt and dirty water, especially for high-risk people.

– When there is an open wound, sore or burn, avoid contact with potentially contaminated soil or water. If contact is required, use waterproof tape and must be cleaned to ensure hygiene.

– People with chronic diseases such as diabetes and immunodeficiency need care and protection from damage to prevent infection.

– When an infection is suspected, medical centers should be consulted, examined, detected and tested to determine the infection with the bacterium B. pseudomallei and treat immediately.
