The vaccine has to be safe, so the researchers will choose a group of low-risk people to test first.

According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnam currently has 4 COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers, namely the Institute for Vaccines and Medical Biological Products (IVAC), Vaccine and Biologicals One Member Limited Company No. 1 (VABIOTECH). Medical Biology Products and Vaccine Research Center (POLYVAC), Nanogen Biotechnology Company Limited.

Vaccines and Biologics One Member Company Limited (VABIOTECH) began preclinical testing of the COVID-19 vaccine in the second animal, the monkey. This unit was tested simultaneously in monkeys and mice. After the injection is complete, the monkey is expected to be monitored for about 3 months, then continue to take blood samples and send them to Hanoi for analysis.

Who will be tested for the COVID-19 vaccine

The COVID-19 vaccine was tested in mice.

According to Dr. Do Tuan Dat, President of Vabiotech, the translation of COVID-19 affects the elderly most strongly. Therefore, this is the target group that all COVID-19 vaccines should target.

However, the researchers will first test low-risk subjects (ages 18 to 59).

According to Mr. Dat, the vaccine must ensure safety, so researchers will choose the group of people with the lowest risk of testing first. If this group is guaranteed to be safe, the investigator will extend the test injection to other subjects, including the elderly group.

If the COVID-19 vaccine does not protect the elderly, it is not a comprehensive vaccine that responds to effective protection for humans before the pandemic.

Under the plan, VABIOTECH will soon ship the vaccine to the US for testing. Today, however, even in the US there is a shortage of primates like monkeys to make this assessment. Therefore, the hamster model is likely to be used.

Previously, this agency tested the COVID-19 vaccine in mice. And the tests on these two animals were done in parallel to get enough data. If VABIOTECH Company accelerates progress faster, it will not be early 2021 to have a batch of vaccine for clinical trials.

Experts believe that if favorable conditions and good and satisfactory laboratory results are met, it will not be until mid-2022 that Vietnam will have the COVID-19 vaccine.
