Vietnam proposed to remove the name of Typhoon Linfa

The General Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) proposed to remove Linfa from the list of 140 names of storms in the Pacific, on November 16.

In a document sent to the International Hurricane Committee, the General Department of Meteorology and Hydrology stated that, in accordance with the regulations approved by the International Hurricane Committee in 1998, member countries contribute 10 storm names to the name bank, used when They’re available. A new storm formed. Using all bank names one by one will be returned to the old name.

Members propose removing one or more storm names from the list if the hurricane has serious consequences. “The proposal to remove the name of Typhoon Linfa, which landed in central Vietnam on October 11, to remind the community of a strong storm, which is causing serious consequences, must always be proactive in the face of extreme weather events.” the head of the General Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

Typhoon Linfa’s name was nominated by Macau, China and used in 2003, 2009 and 2015. Vietnam’s proposal to remove the name for Typhoon Linfa will be considered at the 2021 annual meeting. Macau will select three new storm names and will nominate at the next annual meeting in 2022 for the International Hurricane Commission to select and approve a new hurricane name.

Typhoon Linfa (Typhoon No. 6) formed in the middle of the East Sea on October 9, hitting Quang Nam, Quang Ngai on October 11 with winds of 7-8. The storm winds were not strong, but the rain before, during and after the storm caused flooding, flash floods, and landslides, killing 130 people and disappearing 20; 1,000 houses collapsed; more than 120,000 houses were flooded; more than 1,400 ha of rice and 7,800 ha of crops were damaged.

This is the first time that Vietnam has proposed to remove the name of the storm. Previously, the Sao Mai storm in 2018 was replaced by Sontinh; It is proposed to change the name of the 2019 Lekima matches.
