One day after the storm and flood, the coastal town of Xuan Dai Bay, many lobster cages were broken and washed ashore by the waves. Basket jars full of dead shrimp and shrimp were constantly being landed to sell at low prices. Everywhere, lobsters the size of 2-3 dead toes fell in piles by the roadside, but there were no buyers.

“Normally, this type of green shrimp costs 850,000 VND / kg, but when dead, it can only sell around 300,000 VND, provided they have a beard and claw,” said Ha Thi Loi, 44, Xuan Yen neighborhood. inside the basket of dead shrimp.

Ms. Loi’s family invested nearly VND 1 billion (VND 400 million bank loan) to release more than 15,000 lobsters in 30 cages in the bay, about 2 nautical miles (3.6 km) from the coast. After 8 months, each weighing 700 to 800 grams, it is expected to be sold at the next Tet.

Before Typhoon Etau came in, her husband and the divers went out onto the raft to reinforce the cages, plunged them into the sea to make sure, and then went against the house. On the night of November 11, when the storm passed, a heavy rain lasted, flood water spilled into the bay, causing his family to worry that the shrimp would be discharged with fresh water.

The next morning, it stopped raining, her husband dove into the cage and found that flood water spilled into the sea created a layer of fresh water, and the shrimp plunged into more than 1,000 dead water. The rest also zigzags, agonizes.

Ms Loi said that after typhoon number 5 (Matmo), in late October 2019, the shrimp raised in their cages were also lethargic and several hundred children died. This time, they actively pulled the cage into the cloudy area to reduce the damage. She and her husband continued to increase and hoped to make a profit, but did not expect this flood to die “too terrible.”

“The initial damage was more than 500 million. Now we have to sell and wait how much can be removed. In the near future, we do not know how much money will be paid to the bank,” he said.

Ms. Loi’s family is one of more than 3,000 lobster-raising families in Song Cau City, with more than 1,800 rafts (almost 60,000 cages). According to initial statistics, more than 1,520 cages out of 170 shrimp households died, with losses of around 40 billion VND.

In the same situation, 41-year-old Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan in Xuan Thanh District was saddened when divers repeatedly collected dead lobsters and carried them to shore. His family has 100 cages with 25,000 children adopted for 5 months, reaching 100-200 grams. Two days ago, almost 10,000 children died, he lost several hundred million dong. “I invested billions of dong, not including food, work and bank interest,” he said.

According to Mr. Thuan, in the years leading up to the storm, he held out, knocked down the cages or took advantage of the sale before the storm, so there was not much damage. This year, although he carefully reinforced it, he did not expect a flood.

About a kilometer away, holding her 10-month-old son looking out to sea, 38-year-old Tran Thi Thuoc said she didn’t know how to live. He said that in 2017, the biological brother loaned the family 800 million VND to start a lobster farming business. At that time, the weather was favorable, the shrimp grew steadily, healthy, so they were profitable. The couple brought in 300 million to pay off the debt, the rest continue to invest.

Three months ago, they borrowed 600 million dong from the bank, paid 5 million dong of interest every month, along with money saved from previous seasons to reduce 20,000 seedlings and feed for the number of green lobsters grown in 14 months . to export.

After the flood receded, more than 13,000 children adopted three months ago died completely. This amount of shrimp is about 100 grams, traders do not buy, her husband has to pick up and throw away. In addition, more than 4,000 blue lobsters also died. Currently, his family has lost around 900 million dong.

Mr. Phan Tran Van Huy, Chairman of Song Cau City People’s Committee, said that the flood suddenly descended, so the lobster that rose up was a freshwater shock, a mass death. “Currently, the water is still low, so the shrimp continue to die, the number of damages is increasing,” Huy said.

Not only in the “lobster capital”, the recent flood also caused thousands of houses in the districts of Tuy An, Dong Xuan, Song Cau … to be deeply flooded. Dozens of hectares of crops were flooded, assets were washed away, causing people to fight with their lives.

“We couldn’t get back in time when the floods came up too fast, a lot of things were flooded and damaged,” said 65-year-old Pham Van Nam, saying she couldn’t cook, so she went to get instant noodles and spring water. . and bento from charities.

The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue in Phu Yen province said the flood after Typhoon Etau flooded more than 11,970 houses, about 2 m high; 62 houses collapsed, the roof blown off. One person was missing, two people were injured.

According to Mr. Tran Huu The, Vice Chairman of Phu Yen People’s Committee, the flood was not the same as in 2009, but heavy rains caused heavy flooding in Song Cau Town, Tuy An District, Dong Xuan. In these three locations, the topography has steep hills, few reservoirs to regulate flooding, causing flooding “not the cause of the 50 irrigation lakes in the flood discharge area.”

The province is cooperating with localities to overcome the consequences, mobilizing forces to help people clean their homes and stabilize their lives. “The town continues to do damage statistics to find plans to support people,” said Mr. The.
