Quang BinhMr. Phan Thanh Mien, Chairman of the Bac Trach Commune People’s Committee died of a bacterial infection when he came to rescue people in the floods.
On November 12, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuy, Vice Chairman of the Bo Trach District People’s Committee, said that Mr. Mien, 51, passed away after being treated at the hospital.
“Mien was injured when he went to rescue and rescue people during the October 2020 floods. After several days of being submerged in the flood water, Mr. Mien had a fever and was hospitalized for treatment,” Thuy said .
In mid-October 2020, Mr. Mien and his local forces came to organize the response to the floods. At that time, he suffered a minor knee injury and continued to move people in flooded areas. In the days that followed, the commune president rained heavily, waded through the floodwaters, and provided relief teams to distribute necessities to the people.
When he developed a fever, Mr. Mien was taken to the commune health station for treatment, but did not improve. After that, Mr. Mien was transferred to Vietnam-Cuba-Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital with severe fever, his knee was very swollen, his condition was weak; then transferred to Hue Central Hospital. The patient was infected with mechanical ventilation, continuous dialysis, he died on 11/11.
Doctors say that patients contract Melioidosis, or Whitmore’s disease, through direct contact with contaminated soil and surface water.
Mr. Mien has just been the president of the People’s Committee of the Commune for 3 months.
