On the morning of November 12, the National Assembly secretly voted to approve the appointment of 3 members of the Government. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long was approved to be appointed Minister of Health with 459/472 votes cast (representing 95.42% of the total number of deputies to the National Assembly).
After the voting results, the National Assembly also voted to approve the resolution approving the appointment of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long with 444/445 approved delegates.
Thus, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long officially took over as Minister of Health after more than 4 months as Minister, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Ministry of Health.
In November 2019, the National Assembly removed Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien due to her retirement age. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, a member of the Government Party Committee, is assigned at the same time as Secretary of the Party Health Committee, responsible for the comprehensive activities of the Ministry.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam ceased to directly manage the affairs of the Minister of Health until Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long was assigned to act as Minister to this Minister in July 2020.
Also on the morning of November 12, the National Assembly approved Mr. Huynh Thanh Dat as Minister of Science and Technology; and Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong as Governor of the State Bank.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long (54, from Nam Dinh) is a medical doctor. Mr. Long held various positions in the Ministry of Health before serving as Director of HIV / AIDS Prevention and Control. He has held the position of Vice Minister of Health since December 2011. In October 2018, Mr. Long was transferred to the position of Deputy Chief of the Propaganda Department and was re-elected as Vice Minister of Health as of January 2020.
Mr. Long is one of the deputy directors of the National Steering Committee for the Prevention of Covid-19.
Currently, the Ministry of Health has 4 vice ministers, including Mr. Truong Quoc Cuong, Nguyen Truong Son, Do Xuan Tuyen and Tran Van Thuan.
