Several opposition parliamentarians in the Hong Kong government have resigned to protest against a resolution that China has just approved allowing the removal of MPs considered “a threat to national security”.
The Standing Committee of the National Assembly of China passed a new resolution on 11/11. The resolution allows the Hong Kong government to immediately remove (without going through a court) any legislator who refuses to recognize China’s sovereignty over the Hong Kong special zone, or who seeks the help of external forces are aimed at interfere in the affairs of special zones or commit crimes that threaten national security.
Immediately after the resolution was passed, four Hong Kong MPs were immediately removed from office. To oppose the resolution, this afternoon, the 15 remaining opposition MPs in the Hong Kong government held a press conference, held hands, and announced that they would simultaneously request their resignation tomorrow, November 12.
The resolution was passed shortly after China passed a new national security law that applies to Hong Kong in June, banning separatist acts, the overthrow of the government, terrorism and collusion. Foreign forces pose a threat to national security. Critics said this security law undermines Hong Kong’s autonomy.
