The US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.0 richter, while Turkish authorities reported the 6.6 magnitude earthquake.
The earthquake occurred 14 km northeast of the town of Karlovásion on the island of Samos (Greece). The epicenter is at a relatively shallow depth, only 21 km, which makes the tremor clearly felt in a fairly remote area.
Officials from the two countries said 20 people died in the coastal areas of western Turkey. While two teenagers, a boy and a girl, die on the Greek island of Samos after a wall collapsed.
In Turkey, the number of injured reached 786. Dozens of people have been saved.
Mayor of Izmir City (Turkey) – Mr. Tunc Soyer said that at least 20 buildings in the city have been destroyed.
Images from Izmir show vehicles crushed under the rubble and people are actively digging for survivors.
A total of 196 aftershocks were recorded, 23 of which had magnitudes greater than 4.0.
Zeki Soysal, a resident of Izmir province, told CNN that he left his office building just before it collapsed.
“There was an old woman in the building but we saved her, she came out safe and sound,” Soysal said.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Twitter that he spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to offer his condolences.
At the same time, the Turkish president said that “Ankara is always ready to unite to support Greece” after the disaster.
