Lack of drinking water to live in is an urgent problem for households in flooded areas. In this article, the expert will guide how to create clean water and how to clean the environment after flooding.

Prolonged floods and rains in central provinces from October 6 to date have left at least 130 dead and 18 missing. Not in time to stabilize their morale, people have to face storm No. 9, which experts warn as a ‘level 13 hurricane, level 15’.

Faced with this situation, many relief teams and groups of volunteers have coordinated with local authorities to ensure the safety of people. According to many volunteer groups, people in the floodplains need clean water to drink and live, especially isolated households.

Serious lack of clean water

Quang Tri, a volunteer leader helping people in Huong Hoa, shared with the BBC on the morning of October 26:

“We are helping people avoid Storm 9 by putting away essentials that they couldn’t buy in time. When the storm hits and they can’t buy a store, many people will suffer separation and hunger for a dozen more days. There are homes in the region that have divided their meals and have not yet recovered, and will have no more fighting forces.

This person also added that in areas like Quang Tri, Quang Binh, clean water is the most essential today:

“Many groups do not have canoes or special boats when they approach deeply flooded areas, so they cannot bring many barrels of water for people because they are afraid of capsizing the boats. So clean water is very important now.”

Associate Professor Tran Thi Tuyet Hanh, Professor of Environmental Health, assessed:

“During floods, the lack of clean water to drink and live when all four sides are flooded is a very serious environmental problem, greatly affecting people’s health. Relief from bottled water and bottled water is also limited. It is also difficult to get around by boat, canoe and in many places people are isolated by floods. “

“Therefore, when people are isolated and do not have access to clean water, chemical relief and guidance on how to treat flood water into clean water for temporary use is badly needed. By strengthening coping capacity, localities should guide families to actively prepare chemicals for water treatment, such as alum and Aquatabs mentioned above, “commented Ms. Hanh.

Journalist Le Phong is present in Quang Tri with information on Facebook: “Many people trust that the most necessary thing is the balm for the feet and women need sanitation. Inform everyone that the flood water is falling now everyone has a water shortage. clean”.

Sharing on Facebook, Mr. Le The Nhan, president of the Vietnam Codes organization, said: “People really need clean water to drink even though it is submerged in the sea.”

How to treat flood water for domestic use

Speaking to BBC News in Vietnamese, Associate Professor Tran Thi Tuyet Hanh commented:

“Floods have a great impact on the drinking water supply service for people, such as damaging factories, water supply works, breaking water pipes, contaminating drinking water, everyday life and interrupting epidemics. water supply due to power outages. ”

” As a result, people do not have access to safe water to drink and live. Having enough clean water is very important to help rescue victims, maintain search and rescue operations, as well as ensuring the need for clean water and sanitation for local communities and at evacuation sites. “.

Ms Hanh said that with the historic flooding taking place in the central region and the risk of people facing Typhoon No. 9, it is important to ensure a minimum of 15 liters of clean water / person / day for food and drinks and activities to prevent illness. Therefore, it is essential to educate people to convert flood water to clean water for temporary use in a disaster before clean water service begins again after the flood. “

How to use Aquatabs

Sharing a simple way for people to create clean water in prolonged flooding and rain, Associate Professor Tuyet Hanh offers the following simple steps:

  • Use 1 gram (about 1 teaspoon, teaspoon) of crushed alum, mix with 1 bowl of water and gradually pour into a plastic bucket / bucket containing 20 liters of flood water, stir well to make water.
  • Wait about 30 minutes for the sediment to settle to the bottom of the tank and decant the clear water from the top.
  • Then use 1 Aquatabs tablet to add to 20 liters of clean water, simply whisk in the alum and wait 30 minutes for this Aquatabs tablet to dissolve to disinfect. If Aquataps is not available, use 1 tablet of Cloramin B 250 mg to disinfect per 25 liters of water.

Simply put, people who are isolated during floods have 1 20-25 liter barrel of relatively clean disinfected water to temporarily feed (need to boil), wash vegetables and wash. dishes, tooth brushing, face washing and personal hygiene.

However, the environmental health expert also noted that this is only a temporary solution during floods, when people do not have access to tap water or other sources of clean water.

How to ensure clean water sources after floods

According to the Ministry of Health, during floods, water floods destroy and mix everything that exists on the ground such as sewage waste, latrines, corpses, barns, birds, insects, trees, … seriously polluting the water and environment.

Therefore, as soon as the water recedes, immediate steps must be taken to treat the water and the environment, especially for households that still use well water to prevent contamination from affecting health.

Speaking to the BBC, Associate Professor Tran Thi Tuyet Hanh, people can clean and disinfect wells with the following steps:

  • Collect and remove all the mud from the well, use well water to pour it into the well many times to wash away the dirt, sand, leaves… attached to the well wall and the well floor.
  • Use acid alum with a dose of 50g / 1m3 of water to flood the well water. If the water is very cloudy, use a maximum of 100g / 1m3 of water. Dissolve all the necessary amount of alum in a bucket of water and water it well in the well.
  • Use the bucket to go up and down about 10 times. When alum is added to cloudy water, the alum dissolves to create positive ions. Wait 30 minutes to 1 hour for the sediment to settle and then sterilize.
  • After marking the well with alum, it will be disinfected. Depending on the volume of the well, how many m3, to use the proper amount of chloramine, each tablespoon equals approximately 10 g and 1 small teaspoon equals approximately 1 g chloramine. Therefore, if using Chloramin B 25% and a well containing approximately 5m3 of water, 50g of chemicals are needed, equivalent to 5 tablespoons.
  • Dissolve the amount of chemicals mentioned above in 1 bucket of water and wash it well. Let the dandruff sink in the middle of the water column and gently pull up and down about 10 times. Use this well water to rinse the well to disinfect, for about 30 minutes to be used.

The environmental health expert also emphasized during and after the flood the conditions of infectious diseases, especially intestinal diseases, skin diseases, eye diseases and gynecological diseases …

On his personal Facebook, Father Philippe Nguyen Ba Thong in Quang Tri, a local volunteer, also called: “People in the floodplain are being eaten up by mud water, causing cracks and pain. So sponsor the tube of cream. for the skin “.

Therefore, in addition to foods such as dry food, instant noodles, rice, the Vietnam Codes are also preparing to add scabies medications, eye drops, melaleuca, and probiotics, as well as asking people to donate more. previous article.
