Young nurse with 2 metastatic cancers

With 2 end-stage cancers and 4 other cancers due to metastasis, Thuy remains very resilient and optimistic. The “stubbornness” of the young woman in the wind and the wind of life surprises everyone.

In June 2018, one time during the shift, nurse Hoang Thanh Thuy (born 1981, working in the Hepatitis Department of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases) felt tired, had a high fever and had difficulty breathing.

The next morning, he went downstairs for an X-ray and found a lung tumor larger than 3 cm. Continuing with a positron emission tomography (PET / CT) scan, it was discovered that she had end-stage lung cancer, the tumor had spread to the mediastinal lymph node. Thuy, who works in medicine, of course understands how dangerous the disease is.

Thuy escaped around the corner of the hall, crying out loud. When she calmed down, she wiped away her tears and went back to work, trying not to let anyone notice.

Force is the only way

For the past 13 years, Thuy has been the breadwinner of the family. Perhaps the continuous waves of life that made her strong were the only path she had to follow. In 2004, Thuy got married. Knowing that he had kidney failure, but out of love, she hid her family to be with him. Three years later, when their first daughter was 2 years old, Thuy’s husband’s illness worsened. He developed end-stage renal failure, underwent regular dialysis three times a week.

Her husband’s health continued to decline, he could not do heavy work, he was often ill. In 2014, Thuy decided to sell her house to have money for a kidney transplant for her husband, which at that time was essential. Small families have to move to live in their grandparents’ house.

But after the transplant, Thuy’s husband had more lung problems, heart disease, stroke, a period of paralysis and could not move … Since then, he has spent a lot of time in hospital bed.

My husband is seriously ill, the child is still small and the mother-in-law also suffers from kidney failure, so he is very weak, Thuy alone deserves all the household chores. So when he received the news of a serious illness, he collapsed at first, but did not allow himself to collapse.

“I had to be motivated to get up. If it is not strong, my family, my children, who will take care? ”, Thuy trusted.

A few days later, he went to the hospital to remove the tumor. However, during surgery, the doctor found that the tumor could not be removed, he had to close the incision. Thuy is advised to use chemotherapy and radiation therapy regimens to kill cancer cells.

After 6 cycles of chemotherapy, 25 doses of radiotherapy, Thuy was more stable. But after a month without taking the medication, she suddenly felt dizzy and unsteady. Thanks to his acquaintance to go to the examination, Thuy received the conclusion that the cancer had metastasized to the brain, the size of the tumor was 2.7 cm. She remained hospitalized for rotational gamma radiation surgery (the knifeless form of surgery, which helps the tumor detach from blood vessels and then dissolve).

In late 2019 and early 2020, cancer metastasizes back to the liver, pancreas and bones, the woman is fighting again. Thuy goes alone and takes care of herself on most hospital admissions. Except in cases where your health is too weak or major surgeries that require family confirmation, you can trust your husband or relatives. Not many friends and acquaintances of Thuy know that she is seriously ill. Thuy is very afraid of feeling that people have to worry about her.

In September 2020, when other diseases were still unstable, Thuy received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. This time it was the primary cancer, not the metastasis. The disease is also in the last stage, requiring urgent surgery. After major surgery, he was given chemotherapy for multiple cancer.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy continued for almost 3 years, debilitating the woman. Recently, he often suffered from low red blood cells, his body was very tired. However, you struggle to eat and exercise in order to continue working and living.

“If Mom dies, treat her like she’s already on duty.”

Thuy and his wife have 1 daughter, this year he is in grade 10. At the end of the seventh grade, preparing to enter the eighth grade, he learns of his mother’s illness. At first, Thuy intended to hide his son. But then she couldn’t hide it, Thuy’s husband had to tell the truth and advised her to understand.

From the day she learned the story, the girl had lost her education. The teacher criticized her regularly, her poor grades and her academic performance from good to low average. She was tough, she didn’t trust her mother, she didn’t cry, but Thuy understood that her daughter was very unstable.

One day, Thuy called me to talk. She said: “You are that sickly, you need to be strong and try harder than you. If my son does not pass a public school, he must go to a private school and the mother does not have money for the child to study ”.

With tears in his eyes, Thuy gave further instructions: “The mother’s illness does not predict the future. If the mother is no more, treat her as if she is not yet on duty.

That being said, but on the day his daughter took the high school exam, Thuy was still secretly keeping her transcript at the private school in case her son failed. She said to herself, whatever happens, I have to do everything I can to finish 12th grade, to have a better future.

After the exam, Thuy’s daughter ran to the school gate, hugged her mother and sobbed. Thuy was impatient, thinking that it might be because he didn’t do well:

– Why are you crying?

– Mom. I can take the exam, I definitely passed it. Mom doesn’t need to worry about me anymore!

Looking at his son, Thuy couldn’t hold back the tears. The daughter does not show sadness, does not regret her parents, but bursts into tears when she can do what makes her mother happy. “She must have put in a lot of effort “Thuy touched her heart.

Optimistic to continue

In 2007, at the time 26, Thuy decided to enter Nursing, Hanoi Medical College. Thuy’s husband’s illness was starting to get worse at that time, she wanted to study medicine so she could take care of him.

Having worked for a decade in this profession has made Thuy more resistant to difficulties. She confided: “I have seen many patients suffer more than I do, but they still get over it. Is there a reason why I can’t try it? “

Almost 3 years of “fighting” with the waves, Thuy has never had the intention of leaving life, not even the slightest negative thought. Stable health, keep working, early in the morning he will take advantage of the Bach Mai Hospital to take more medicines.

Thuy is currently facilitated by colleagues from the Faculty of Hepatitis, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, to perform administrative work, manage medical records and administer medicine cabinets at the Faculty. When there are many patients, she will take care of the patients, deliver the medicine …

Chemotherapy Chemotherapy for cancer caused Thuy to almost lose his hair and he had to shave his head. A friend gave her a wig to wear when she goes to work or goes out. Looking at Thuy with his silky hair, white skin and ever-fresh face, many people cannot believe that he suffers from a disease known as the “death sentence.”

Thuy shared that the secret is not to think too much about the disease, try to eat and exercise well. For a long time, you no longer asked your doctor about your prognosis. Thuy’s greatest desire is to accompany her husband and children for a long time, to see her grow up.
