The General Tax Department is reviewing Netflix’s revenue statistics since its presence in Vietnam in 2016 to collect taxes.
At the 389 Steering Committee’s October 20 press conference, Mr. Vu Manh Cuong, Director of the Inspection and Inspection Department (General Tax Department) said that he was using professional measures, coordinating with the Anti-laundering Department. money (State Bank) to Netflix’s income statistics derived from the provision of services in Vietnam in 2016 to collect taxes.
According to Mr. Cuong, the Cyber Security Law was in effect, so foreign companies doing business with income in Vietnam from online activities must store data in Vietnam. At the same time, they are obliged to transfer this data to the tax authorities for the tax administration.
“Currently, Netflix has worked with the Ministry of Finance and the General Tax Department to establish representative offices and servers in Vietnam to serve tax filing work,” said Mr. Cuong.
Netflix is a service that streams TV shows, movies, and more on Internet-connected devices. Currently, this application has around 300,000 subscribers in Vietnam. Each month, users have to pay between 180,000 and 260,000 per month to use Netflix services. However, this unit has never complied with tax obligations in Vietnam.
In terms of avoiding tax losses with e-commerce activities, Mr. Cuong said that the tax industry has implemented many solutions, including the completion of a legal corridor. The Tax Administration Law, effective as of July 1, regulates the tasks, functions and coordination between ministries and agencies, in which commercial banks are responsible for providing sales data when available. required tax authorities.
The Inspection and Inspection Department (General Tax Department) said it had combined and requested 45 commercial banks to provide information so that the industry has tax management data. According to the data provided by the banks, in Hanoi alone, there are more than 18,300 organizations and individuals that are engaged in online sales with a total revenue of 1,462 billion VND from Google, Facebook, Youtube … Therefore, the agency Taxes have led organizations and individuals to file and pay taxes and collect nearly 14 billion VND.
With rental activities through applications such as Booking, Agoda, Airbnb, the tax agency identifies organizations and individuals with revenues of more than 5,000 billion VND in the first 8 months of this year. Thanks to that, this unit also collected taxes of 93 billion dong.
In the coming period, the General Tax Office will continue to strengthen the legal corridor, coordinating with commercial banks, ministries and branches to clean the database for the tax administration. At the same time, the tax industry has also promoted the inspection and inspection of individuals and organizations that have spread and supported with the reporting media but have not voluntarily paid taxes.
