The march through the night is swift
After nearly 3 days of completing his fellow search and rescue mission, Lt. Col. Quach Hieu Thanh, Deputy Director of the Specialist Department of Gas Resources, Border Intermediate School 24 (Border Guard Command), had no time to chat. with us by phone.
The head of the Air Resources Supervision Department announced that the team was ready to accept orders. As expected, at 10:30 pm on the same day, the order of the school administration was transferred to the Faculty. After 2 hours of preparation, 10 soldiers and soldiers with full equipment, technical means, weapons and search and rescue equipment brought 3 professional dogs ready to march. At 0:30, the group of buses left Border Middle School 24 in Son Tay (Hanoi) to go to Central.
“We marched continuously, almost non-stop, we just stopped eating and drinking and going to the bathroom, then we got in the car, he continued. At 2:00 p.m. on October 14, he was present at the Phong Xuan Commune (H.Phong Dien) Commune People’s Committee headquarters, then continued maneuvering there, “said Lieutenant Colonel Thanh.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Thanh, the road from Phong Xuan Commune to the Song Bo Forest Protection Station site is just over 10 km, but the mission takes 1.5 hours to reach. On the way, the mountain eroded, flooded across the road, the road was crushed, cut into many sections, waiting dangerous even for people entering and rescuing.
“Thinking of the boring wait and the expectant eyes of the relatives, the families of the teammates outside, we found all the determined ways to bring the sniffing dog to inspect the scene, to plan the search,” Lieutenant Colonel Thanh speak.
Find teammates lying in the mud, rocks
On the second day of the search, at 5 am on October 15, the team returned to the site to search for partners. 3 sniffing dogs radiating in all directions, sniffing patiently, checking every meter of dirt in the middle of the vast field. At 10:30 a.m., a sniffing dog from the group suddenly howled and, at the same time, raked through the mud with its front paws. The area is likely to have been discovered, but neither humans nor dogs were able to delve deep, as underfoot was debris, dotted with rocks, easy to jam.

Also from this first position, the field commander gathered all the forces and the means of excavation to expand, then in turn found personal belongings. The remaining bodies are also scattered. Until 7:30 on the same day, body number 13 was removed.
“If you first calculate from the location of the sniffing dog, the 13 bodies found were all within 60-70 meters of the original location, but they had to be excavated 2 or 3 meters deep. When the body was found, the body was kicked in the leg, the person was kicked in the stomach, held in the shoulder … Looking at our companions, we felt so much pain!
According to Lieutenant Colonel Thanh, for almost 2 days and nights, he marched at high speed while working tirelessly, but the entire team stayed behind in search of partners. The task of searching for 13 officers and soldiers was completed on the night of October 15, before the next torrential rain fell on the area.
On the night of October 15 and 16, the Rao Trang 3 hydroelectric area rained heavily. Search and rescue forces still face many difficulties in reaching the areas of buried workers.
