The Minister of Education and Training, Phung Xuan Nha, is leading the inspection and has adequate plans to deal with the negative reflections on the new first grade textbooks.
On October 11, the Ministry of Education and Training said that it had sent an official dispatch to the National Assessment Council for Vietnamese Grade 1 Textbooks, stating that in the past, the Ministry has verified and supervised the implementation of the program and new first grade textbooks in some locations.
The test results showed that 5 textbooks were approved by Minister Phung Xuan Nha and selected by the schools, the teaching organization, initially met the requirements. First graders are familiar with new teaching methods, with enthusiasm and confidence in learning.
However, for more than a week, reflections on Vietnamese first grade textbooks containing inappropriate content have been spreading in the media. Therefore, the Ministry requested the National Grade 1 Vietnamese Language Book Evaluation Council to review and verify the indicated press content and submit a report to the Ministry before October 17.
Prof. Tran Dinh Su, chairman of the Vietnam Textbook Evaluation Council, said that he would plan to hold a 15-member meeting to review at the request of the Ministry of Education and Training. In the previous evaluation process, the Council has considered each page, article, question, word and picture to evaluate.
In the 2020-2021 school year, first grade students begin learning a new general education curriculum and new textbooks. After a month of putting new books to use, many parents and teachers rated teaching and learning Vietnamese subjects “heavier and more difficult” than the previous program. Children are forced to memorize words and rhymes in a short time, which leads to ineffective learning, leading to fatigue and pressure. The book has too many words, uses local words, and the requirements are not suitable for children entering first grade.
A few days later, Canh Kite’s Vietnamese textbook was controversial as it used fables, inappropriate translations, and allegedly taught bad habits to students. However, the editor-in-chief stated that the writing team has done it very carefully. The stories used have positive messages, not negative, as many people reflect.
