The Japanese Defense Ministry announced on October 9 that this fleet of warships had just conducted anti-submarine exercises in the South China Sea, according to NHK.
According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the aforementioned warships called Vietnam’s Cam Ranh port on October 10 for resupply.
The fleet consists of Japan’s largest destroyer, the JS Kaga (also known as a helicopter destroyer, essentially no different from a medium-sized aircraft carrier), the destroyer JS Ikazuchi, and the submarine JS Shoryu.
The visit of the fleet of warships to Cam Ranh is believed to be part of the Japanese government’s effort to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam. Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide is expected to visit Vietnam in mid-October this year on his first overseas trip since taking office.
