The Hanoi Planning and Architecture Department has proposed to the authorities that they consider building a second airport in the Ung Hoa district, south of the city.

In suggesting the master planning project of the airport and airport system at the national level for the period 2021-2030, with a vision for 2050, the Hanoi Planning and Architecture Department has made the above recommendation.

According to this Department, the master plan project is being studied by the Ministry of Transport. The ministry will evaluate the development and expansion of airports such as Noi Bai, Cat Bi, Da Nang, Long Thanh … in order to have guidance to reserve ground funds or study additional airports and new airports.

Based on the demand forecast for the metropolitan area of about 150 million passengers per year (the area of Ho Chi Minh city is about 170 million passengers per year), the master planning consultant is Traffic Design Consulting Corporation. Transportation – Joint Stock Company (TEDI) proposed to increase the capacity of Noi Bai airport from 50 million to 100 million passengers per year. TEDI also proposed to build a second airport for the capital region, the planned location of Thanh Mien District, Binh Giang Province, Hai Duong Province from 2035.

However, the Hanoi Planning and Architecture Department said that the search for the proposed location for the construction of the second airport for the Hanoi area requires the city’s opinion at the investigation stage. According to the Hanoi Capital Region Construction Plan to 2020 and Vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in 2008, the second airport is expected to be located in the Ung Hoa district, south of Hanoi.

The Capital Region Construction Plan adjustment project for 2030 and a vision for 2050, approved in 2016, specifies four options for the location of the second airport for the Hanoi metropolitan area, including: Ly Nhan District (Province of Ha Nam), distance to the center of Hanoi 60-65 km; Ung Hoa District, 35-40 km; Thanh Mien and Binh Giang districts (Hai Duong province), 45-50 km; Tien Lang District (Hai Phong), 120 km.

Through analysis, the Hanoi Planning and Architecture Department assessed that the layout of the second airport in southern Hanoi has many advantages. That’s the reasonable distance and time to the center of Hanoi; Ability to connect convenient traffic, simultaneously access all three types of traffic: road, waterway and rail; Favorable conditions for site clean-up, land development fund (capable of organizing an airport with a scale of 1,300 ha) and conditions for the development of satellite urban areas, industrial parks, multimodal transport, and warehouse system.

In the north, there are airports Noi Bai (Hanoi), Cat Bi (Hai Phong), Van Don (Quang Ninh), Dien Bien Phu (Dien Bien), Na San (Son La, closed since 2004). According to the plan, Noi Bai will receive 35 million passengers by 2030, 50 million passengers after 2030. However, passenger traffic through Noi Bai airport has reached 29 million. In 2019, the station shows signs of overload, the runway, taxiways and parking lots are degraded.
