Professor Ngo Bao Chau tells the story of his youth, he was “extremely surprised” when he received his first salary as a teacher in France; the money was not even enough to buy a plane ticket to Vietnam.
The truthful exchange on career stories and life stories told by Professor Ngo Bao Chau to young people in the framework of the massive conference “Scientific Research Exchange” at the University of Natural Sciences on September 28 of the century. 10th anniversary of the teacher receiving the Fields Award.
In the exchange session, Le Ngoc Lam, a senior Chemistry student at the University of Sciences, asked: “I am also doing scientific research. There is a fact, since you It has been 2 years since you received the subject in the research lab, compared to other peers like economics or media, you often have a lot of free time to participate in outside activities, but for them If you are a science student, you have You spend a lot of time in the lab, and you’re pretty busy overall.
But, as I found out upon graduating from school, the current salary for a bachelor’s degree in scientific research is not high. I think it could also be one of the reasons that benchmarks for entering academic fields are dropping. Could you share some actions that motivate us to follow the path of scientific research? ”.
Responding to the student’s question, Professor Ngo Bao Chau said: “I think that is also a disadvantage for a scientific researcher, but it is also normal. The story of young people who do scientific research and don’t have time to socialize, make friends … in the past, me too. Until I’m 30-40 years old, I don’t have the concept of going out to eat or going out with friends, but only on rare occasions. Partly because I have no need, it is like another society, perhaps desirable but not related to me.
I think I have to pay the price, there are things that I can access but people cannot, on the contrary, there are also things that many people can access but not me.
Regarding the concerns of young people on the issue of “income” of researchers, Professor Ngo Bao Chau also said that, for a young scientist who has just started a career, the economic problem, survival is extremely difficult.
“I think this one thing is the fact that teachers of the past were much more difficult than you are now. I still remember Mr. Le Tuan Hoan, Mr. Pham Ngoc Hung, who taught me mathematics from high school. I remember how difficult it was when they graduated from school to take their PhD exams. The two men at that time only had 2 pants (one to wear normally – the back of the butt had a very beautiful “cobweb”, and the other pants without a cobweb were just to meet the leader or get closer to someone always keep it on the corner).
According to Professor Ngo Bao Chau, the effort that scientists have to dedicate is always deserved by society: “Now you follow the path of research with many more opportunities, perhaps I am subjective but I think you can teach more, do more topics, it may not be too abundant but he has enough to live with his job and not have to do other jobs (like selling cigarettes, making clothes) … Now several state and private funds have also been created to support scientific researchers ”.
Professor Ngo Bao Chau emphasized that in other countries, the conditions may be easier, but you should not think that it is easier than in your own country, the salary of scientists in some advanced countries is also much lower than in other industries. society.
“In France, for example, a scientifically advanced country, but the salary of scientists is very low. I was also personally surprised a few times. When I was young, I thought I didn’t need money, I just needed time to do research. Actually, I think, as long as people give me enough food, enough accommodation to research, not rich. But I also thought that when I went to Professor in France, I had to have a rich life, not too worried, but I was very surprised when I received my first payroll. It is so. The payroll is not enough to buy a plane ticket to Vietnam. It’s not that people treat me badly, but because of the same level of salary as teachers in France.
Or in the United States, finances are much more abundant, but scientists generally have a much lower income than many other professions. For example, a student who works in finance, as soon as he has a PhD (Ph.D.) can have a salary as a math teacher, or if he works in artificial intelligence for Facebook, he can triple a teacher’s salary. That is relatively social and the market mechanism dominates like this ”, quoted GS Chau.
“I really think the conditions for scientists in Vietnam are much better now than before. And we have a great opportunity to do science. Life has not always been calm, I think the great luck for me is mathematics. Mathematics is something that I never give up and never give up, firmly in my life, ”shared Professor Ngo Bao Chau.
Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hoang Linh – Rector of the University of Natural Sciences exchanged: “In terms of income, those who work in science, even abroad, cannot be compared with other occupations. But each profession has a different joy. I think scientists have the joy of discovering, the happiness of proving themselves …
In addition, we also have fun teaching, doing interesting topics, opportunities, like researching, attending seminars abroad. Thanks to scientific research, we have fun and have opportunities that people in other professions don’t have. For example to research institutes, international universities … Furthermore, we are all different.
Personally, if I work in the bank, sitting all day with a computer and a pile of papers, I would not like it. Each field has different joys and we choose the one that suits us best ”.
