The golden boy Ngo Quy Dang: ‘Mathematics did not tire’

To participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad, Ngo Quy Dang had to study the high school math program in just a few months, many days they stayed up until 3 in the morning to make up for the knowledge.

One day after becoming the first tenth grade student in Vietnam to win the gold award at the International Mathematical Olympiad, Ngo Quy Dang happily attended the seminar organized by the Higher School of Natural Sciences of the University of Natural Sciences. . He was given the privilege of sitting in the front row, sharing his winning feelings and learning experiences.

“When I went to the contest website, when I saw my name win the first prize, I was full of happiness. This which I have never thought about, is like a dream with a happy ending,” shared Dang.

With the guidance of his maternal grandfather and math teacher, Dang soon got closer to math. Because he liked numbers, Đăng was frustrated to see that the number of seconds the traffic light had just counted to 5 or 3 had changed color. “At the time I thought that the numbers did not obey the laws of nature, so I felt uncomfortable,” she explained. Having mastered the dial, Dang began to learn to calculate. When I was 2 years old I could already speak, I knew how to do math at 4, the higher the number, the better.

When he went to high school to study at the Archimedes school, his capacity for self-learning gradually developed. Dang often asked his teachers to assign math homework. “Because I love math, I don’t learn tired,” Dang explained, saying that at that moment when I first learned about the International Mathematical Olympiad, I rekindled the hope that one day I would be on the national team. Try the toughest problems.

The post itself is well received but poorly presented, the text is not beautiful. In the 9th grade, district level math test for excellent students in 9th grade, I finished everything but only got 19/20 points, I lost one point per presentation. Listening to advice from his algebra teacher, Đăng wrote spaced lines to make the test more open. For the city level exam, the male student won 19.75 / 20, winning first prize. “I have overcome and overcome my own weaknesses. Although not that great, the teacher’s advice is still very meaningful to me, helping me lay the foundation for future achievements,” Post said.

The first award for excellent student of Mathematics at the city level helped Dang win direct admission to the Math or Tin class of the High School of Natural Sciences, University of Natural Sciences. After studying, seeing a relatively large number of students apply directly to math class, fearing that I would run out of opportunities to study at my favorite school, I sent them to the Tin class to be sure of winning. After that, I entered math class like my friends, passed two general and specialized tests with the same score of 8.5, and became a math class student as expected.

As one of six students on this year’s International Mathematics Olympiad team, Dang said it was an honor and great luck for a student of 10. However, it also caused me a lot of trouble. Learn the knowledge of the entire high school level in just a few months. Besides spending time in class asking the teacher and siblings, I will review the failed lessons when I get home, “maybe I will find a new solution.” I consider myself weak in Mathematics, I also study this part more on my own.

Despite the disadvantage of age, Dang never wanted to give up. I think I need to keep the spirit of optimism because when I feel comfortable, I can be successful. About a month before the exam, Dang and his team members entered the sprint phase. The amount of knowledge to receive more means that the number of articles you do not understand will also increase. In addition to 9 hours of study at school, Dang broke his own sleeping rules before 12 at night, spent more time checking, some days until almost 3 a.m. Not only do I practice and correct lessons, but I also analyze parts of me that they are weak and lacking in knowledge to be able to ask the teachers and brothers of the team to teach them.

Post with manual numbers, write down good or unsolvable problems. When I have free time or study at night, I will read it again so that the next time I find myself I will do it better.

The Mathematics Olympiad exam takes place in two days and Dang must take 3 lessons in 4.5 hours each day. The first day went smoothly, I completed three lessons, including the Image Problem, which is the scariest part. So far Dang keeps joking if the picture is more difficult, I’m not sure I can.

On the second day of the exam, Dang struggled when the latest post required complicated knowledge in many fields. It took him over an hour but he couldn’t figure it out, Đăng came back to carefully review the two papers to make sure he didn’t lose any more points. With a reasonable strategy, he got the total score of the first 5 cards, got 1/7 of the last card, won the gold medal, and placed fourth out of 616 participants. This achievement helped Dang become the first tenth grade student in Vietnam to win a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Receiving many compliments, the 17-year-old just smiled, scratched his head and said “I have to try harder.” Dang understands that achieving high results early will put the pressure he will face in next year’s exams. However, the student stated that “it would be a year older, more courageous and confident to overcome”.

Mr. Le Cong Loi, Rector of the Higher School of Natural Sciences, expressed his pride in the student’s achievements. He said that since he was a high school student, Dang was talented in math and continued to maintain his performance upon entering high school. Besides attending regular classes with classmates, I didn’t miss any refresher lessons. With a knack, passion, and conquering the pinnacle of mathematics, Dang quickly caught up with the 11th and 12th grade students. In addition to the quality of mathematics, I also did well in other subjects and was also a master of ceremonies. “. very professional with clever and clever guiding errors, “shared Mr. Loi.

Thinking that he still has more time to accumulate and perfect himself, next time, Dang will learn more about advanced math and computer science. I believe that this knowledge will directly help in international examinations and you will have more skills to participate in the field of scientific research. “By making my dream of winning a gold medal come true in the Olympic Mathematics Games, I have become a little more confident and hope to continue to achieve more goals,” Dang said with a smile.

Due to the influence of Covid-19, the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad in 2020 hosted by Russia is organized in the form of an online exam. The exam featured 616 contestants from 105 countries and territories. As a result, 316 students won medals, including 49 gold, 112 silver, and 155 bronze.

The Vietnamese team competed at the University of Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University on September 21-22 under the supervision of the Russian Embassy staff and the camera system.

In addition to Ngo Quy Dang, Vietnam also has Truong Tuan Nghia, an eleventh grade student from the Higher School of Natural Sciences, who won the gold medal. Nguyen Mac Nam Trung, from Ho Chi Minh City National University 12th Grade Gifted High School, won a silver medal. Chu Thi Thanh, Grade 12, Vinh Phuc Specialty High School and Tran Nhat Minh, Grade 12, Le Hong Phong (Nam Dinh) Specialized High School won a bronze medal. Dinh Vu Tung Lam, 11th grade from the Higher School of Natural Sciences, received a certificate of merit from the organizers.
