ChinaA fire broke out at Huawei’s 5G research center under construction in Dongguan City, Guangdong, this afternoon.
Officials in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, said a fire broke out at a Huawei building on A Lishan Road, where the Chinese telecommunications group plans to locate its research facilities. A source said the facility will research materials and test 4G and 5G antenna technology for Huawei.
140 firefighters were dispatched to the scene and were able to put out the fire. The main flammable material is the soundproof cotton used in the building, Dongguan City firefighters said in another statement.
Video from the scene showed black smoke billowing from the blue-and-white painted building near Tung Son Lake. A Huawei spokesperson announced that it could not provide details about the fire.
Dongguan City officials have yet to announce the fire victims. “The burned building is a steel structure and has not been put into use,” said the Dongguan government social media account.
Huawei is headquartered in Shenzhen City and owns a large office complex designed with European architecture in Dongguan. About 25,000 Huawei employees work at the complex.
