The Chinese newspaper Global Times warned that a war would break out if Taiwanese leader Thai Anh Van violated mainland China’s Anti-Secession Law.

“Taiwanese leader Thai Anh Van, who wanted to deepen his ties with Washington during the reception of a high-ranking State Department official, was clearly joking with fire. If he violates China’s Anti-Secession Law, war will break out and Tai Anh Van will be removed, “said Global Times, People’s Daily newspaper, Communist Party spokesman, 9/19 wrote on the official Twitter account.

The statement was made by the Global Times after US Undersecretary of State in charge of economic, energy and environmental affairs, Keith Krach, visited Taiwan from September 17-19. This is the highest-level visit by a US State Department official to Taiwan in four decades and Ms. Thai hosted a reception for Mr. Krach at her mansion on the night of September 18.

China enacted the Anti-Separation Law in March 2005, aimed at preventing Taiwan’s independent and separatist movement, stating that Taiwan was part of China’s “indivisible” territory.

The Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) later objected and condemned it as a unilateral step to change the status quo, increase tensions over the Taiwan Strait and violate international law.

The Global Times Twitter post apparently mentions Article 8 of the law, which provides for the use of “non-peaceful measures” to unify Taiwan. Under this law, the three conditions for the use of “non-peaceful measures”, including the “forces claiming Taiwan independence” to secede from mainland China, appear to be “the incidents that led to the separation of Taiwan.” leave China “and no longer be able to unify peace.

Last weekend, the Chinese military conducted a large-scale exercise near the island of Taiwan, around the same time as Krach’s visit. During the two-day exercise from September 18 to 19, 37 PLA aircraft, including fighters and bombers, overwhelmed Taiwan, crossing the “middle line” that runs through the center of the strait that separates the island. and mainland China.

The Taiwan air defense force deployed many approaching fighters, broadcast warnings via radio waves, notified PLA pilots “meddling in the middle line” and asked them to leave. The PLA pilots responded “there is no middle line.”

During her visit to the Taiwan Air Defense Base in Penghu today, Ms Thai praised the “heroic act” of the pilots who blocked the approaching Chinese military plane. According to her, frontline duties in Penghu have become increasingly burdensome as mainland China intensifies “acts of provoking and undermining regional peace.”
