At noon on September 22, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases announced that 5 cases of Covid-19 had been cured, of which 2 cases were once the heaviest patients in the North, requiring ECMO intervention, mechanical ventilation.

The first case is 793 patient (male, 58, from Bac Giang), is the most serious Covid-19 patient in the North in her new term. The man was transferred to the intensive care unit on August 14 in serious condition. He has a background disease of hypertension, and the superinfection adds to the cause of bacteria other than SARS-CoV-2, causing the disease to deteriorate rapidly.

On the morning of August 24, the patient had to switch from non-invasive mechanical ventilation to intubation through the endotracheal tube. The lung damage of the patient was evaluated to be very severe and complicated, even at one point the lung function was affected by up to 90%.

On August 26, the patient continued to be assigned to perform ECMO (artificial cardiopulmonary technique). Dr Pham Van Phuc from the Resuscitation Department actively shared that after mobilizing the maximum amount of support, the patient response was still very low, the doctors were extremely concerned, almost on call 24/24 to the patient side.

Fortunately, after four days of running ECMO, he began to respond to medication and progressed better. At noon on September 3, the patient was suspended from ECMO, switched to invasive mechanical ventilation, and then switched to vitro oxygen.

The remaining heavy case is patient 1045 (male, 72 years old, in Thong Nhat commune, Gia Loc district, Hai Duong). On August 19, he began ill with fever, headache, and fatigue. On August 30, the patient was admitted to Hai Duong General Hospital, where samples were taken for analysis and quarantined. On September 1, results from the Hai Duong Center for Disease Control and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology showed that this person was positive for SARS-CoV-2.

After that, the patient was transferred to isolation and treated at Dong Anh Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Dr. Pham Van Phuc said that as soon as he was transferred from the locality to the Active Rehabilitation Department, patient 1045 was in very poor condition. At the time of hospital admission, he had severe respiratory failure, he had to immediately put on a mechanical breathing apparatus. Furthermore, the patient was also infected with bacteria other than SARS-CoV-2.

The doctors judged it as a case with a very severe prognosis because the elderly patient has underlying conditions, such as an enlarged prostate, hernia of the cervical spine. On the first day he was at risk for ECMO (artificial cardiopulmonary technique), but afterwards he responded well to mechanical ventilation and his condition improved.

After 8 days of treatment, invasive mechanical ventilation, the patient’s lung condition improved, he switched to low mechanical ventilation support, and then oxygen was administered. On September 14, the patient was able to stop breathing oxygen.

In the new phase of the Covid-19 epidemic (from July 25 to the present), the North recorded four serious cases of Covid-19. In addition to patient 1045, 793, there was patient 812 (male, 63 years old, pizza delivery man at Store No. 106 Tran Thai Tong) and patient 867 (male 63 years old, Tan Hong commune, Binh Giang district, Hai Duong)).

As of September 22, three of these patients have been declared cured. Patient 867 has stabilized his health, has no symptoms, but is still waiting enough negative times for SARS-CoV-2.

In addition to 2 serious cases, today, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases announced that it was cured of 3 other cases of Covid-19, including patient 794 (male, 2 years old, Yen Dinh commune, Son Dong district, Bac Giang) , patient 751 (male, 45 years old, Hoa Phat ward, Cam Le district, Da Nang city) and patient 811 (female, 33 years old, Yen Dinh commune, Son Dong district, Bac Giang).

Patient 794 and 811 are grandchildren and daughter-in-law respectively of patient 793. His family has 6 people with Covid-19 after traveling to Da Nang, and one person has yet to recover.
