Over the weekend, Trump vowed to soon nominate the newest justice candidate for the US Supreme Court after Ginsburg died Sept. 18 of complications from cancer. Trump has a great opportunity to replace Ms. Ginsburg now, as the Senate is likely to approve her nomination.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also vowed to begin the approval process shortly after Trump has chosen the right person. If this effort is successful, the ideological balance of the US Supreme Court will continue to drift even further to the conservative side.
Democrats have harshly criticized McConnell, who in 2016 refused to hold hearings with the Supreme Court justice appointed by former President Barack Obama. McConnell argued that 2016 was election year and that the selection of a new judge should wait until the new president is elected.
Democrats have called for the selection of a Supreme Court justice to replace Ginsburg, so they must wait until after the November 3 election.
