Suga Yoshihide, who was originally a farmer and became prime minister at the age of 71, has achieved what many consider extraordinary in the politics of Japan’s lineage.

Suga Yoshihide has a very close relationship with his “boss”, former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, but the two have completely different backgrounds and styles.

Former Prime Minister Abe was born into a family rich in political traditions, whose father served as Foreign Minister (Shintaro Abe). Many members of his extended family are seasoned politicians who hold high positions in the government. Against this background, Abe’s career has developed very quickly and smoothly.

The new prime minister, Suga Yoshihide, is the eldest son of a family that grows blackberries in Akinomiya village, now in Yuzawa city, Akita prefecture, a land of mountains and white snow. Starting from scratch and without the political backing of his family, he reached the peak of his career thanks to his strong will and determination.

Desperate to change his life, to work hard at a young age to make ends meet, and to study law at Hosei University in Tokyo, he soon realized that politics is what shapes and affects the world. Therefore, after working an office job and overtime to earn more income, he decided to choose a political path by running for the Yokohama city hall, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Due to a lack of political experience and personal prestige, Suga strives to compensate with courage and hard work. Members of the ruling PLD party often tell each other the story of a young Suga who goes from door to door, including 300 houses a day, campaigning for a total of 30,000 people to vote for him. In the process, he has broken 6 pairs of shoes. And that extraordinary effort pays off: Suga won the election and served 2 consecutive terms.

After that, Suga continued to rise up and assume many different positions in the government. His bad youth experiences made him a seasoned behind-the-scenes negotiator.

In December 2012, when Abe Shinzo became Prime Minister for the second time, Suga was appointed Chief of Staff. During this period, Abe reformed the cabinet three times, but Suga remained in the same position, becoming the longest-serving Chief of Staff in the history of the PLD (almost 8 years, until September 2020).

Suga is the main spokesman and right hand to Prime Minister Abe, an adviser on important policies, who contributes to the realization of many policies and changes in Japan’s rigid administrative apparatus.

Especially when the government faces difficult times, Suga always faces the public calmly.

According to the Japan Times, during his time as Chief of Staff, Suga held thousands of press conferences expressing the views, positions and decisions of the government.

In May 2019, Suga traveled to the US, meeting and having discussions with many high-level leaders from the host country, including President Donald Trump. Many experts consider that the visit vigorously promotes economic cooperation between the two countries.

Suga’s breakthrough came in 2019 when he announced the time when he changed the Japanese era name from Binh Thanh (Heisei) to Lenh Hoa (Reiwa). Today, many Japanese still affectionately call him by the name “Uncle Lei Hoa”.

In the process of serving the country, Suga Yoshihide was a politician who was not involved in corruption, controversy or discredit. Pay special attention to taking care of your own health.

In Yuzawa’s hometown, Yoshihide Suga is seen as a pride. Your image and name are printed on many products, such as T-shirts, which are sold in many markets.

“Suga’s career path and background are an inspiration to many people. He is an independent man,” said Brad Glosserman, Japan’s political economist.

Daniel M. Smith, associate professor at Harvard University, commented on the new Prime Minister of Japan: “He represents the continued stability in Abe’s administration, while also demonstrating the contradiction compared to Abe, in the sense that He was not of an “aristocratic” lineage, the typical privilege of so many PLD politicians.
