ChinaThe green housing pilot project in Chengdu city is compared to a “vertical forest” with a garden on each balcony.
The 826 apartments in the Qiyi City Forest Garden apartment complex sold out in April 2020, according to the real estate company managing the project, but instead of becoming a modern eco-haven, the building looks like scenes from the post-apocalyptic movie. Only a few families moved into a mosquito-rich apartment complex.
The project in the southwest of the city was built in 2018. The balconies in each apartment are designed to provide space for trees to grow. However, without caretakers, trees were abundant in 8 buildings of the apartment complex, attracting mosquitoes. Trees covered almost uninhabited balconies and leaves grew from the railing.
Some apartments have to seal the windows with duct tape to prevent mosquitoes from entering. According to the Global Times, only 10 households moved in the entire house.
The project is controversial. Some residents are concerned about the safety of the branches that grow outside the 30-story buildings, while many support the idea of living close to nature. The developer says they will maintain the property four times a year and implement mosquito control measures. The Qiyi City Forest Garden is just one of many “vertical forest” projects in China to absorb carbon dioxide and provide clean oxygen to cope with air pollution. Other projects include Green Tower in Nanning, Jiangsu province.
