IndiaThe catfish floats in the air, grabbing the head of a snake while being grabbed by the tail by another snake in Kanha National Park.
Residents of Ghanshyam Prasad Bhanware videotaped a catfish fight between two hungry snakes in Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh state on July 19. The catfish grabs the head of a water snake with the checkered keel with its tail locked in the jaw of the second snake. He wrestled with two snakes for 30 minutes in that suspended position.
According to Bhanware, the snake first pulled the catfish out of the lake just before its species appeared and grabbed the tail. “The fish has a very strong will to survive. This is the first time I have seen a fish fight two snakes at the same time,” Bhanware said.
Eventually the snake below was exhausted and fell into the water. The other snake also wandered away a few minutes later when the catfish began to fight. The fish survived and swam away.
The checkered keel is a non-venomous snake that is common in streams and swamps in Asia. Their bodies are usually olive brown with dark cells. This water snake can be 50-75cm long and specializes in eating frog, fish, and reptile eggs.
