ABC News quoted the Orange County Police Department as saying the person suspended was Deputy Chief Steve Hortz, who served 12 years in the industry. Mr. Hortz was arrested on September 10.

In late July, the officer arrived at a home in Yorba Linda City, California after receiving a call reporting the death of an elderly man who died of natural causes.

On 9-9, the lawyer representing the man’s family reported to the police that some of the elements of the house had disappeared. The attorney also sent surveillance cameras showing Mr. Hortz entering the home at least three times, “stealing things and going out.”

Specifically, Mr. Hortz entered the home for the first time on July 27 in uniform. He returned on August 10 and 16, dressed in civilian clothes, stole safes, ceiling fans, rifle cases, and some other unidentified items.

Upon investigation, the Orange County Police Department suspects that Mr. Hortz “has committed acts of theft,” for which he arrested, suspended his charge and was later detained in the Santa Ana prison.

Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes promised to hold Mr. Hortz accountable, saying the officer’s actions affected the organization: “Deputy Sheriff Hotrz returned to that house early in the morning, to his home at through the keyless door You are seen taking items from the surveillance cameras Suspicious actions (Mr. Hortz’s) violate the public trust, cannot be excused or tolerated You will be held accountable through a full administrative investigation and internal criminal.

In response, the Orange County Sheriffs Association union described the allegations against Mr. Hortz as “shocking and disappointing.”
