On the night of 9/6, Da Nang Health Department had detailed information about a special case that tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 and four family members. These people may have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 without knowing it.
Negative after 2 consecutive positives
Specifically, the patient named PNS was born in 1954, lives in Ngu Hanh Son district, Da Nang. The patient has a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and a persistent cough due to chronic obstructive pneumonia. The patient lies in place, without moving for many years.
On September 5, the patient had a fever and cough, so she went to the emergency room at Da Nang C Hospital. At 7:30 p.m. on the 5.9, the patient received a COVID-19 sample from Hospital C and showed positive results on the morning of September 6.
At 6:00 am the same day, Hospital C continues to transfer previously collected samples to the CDC for analysis, the test result is positive. The patient was transferred to Hoa Vang Hospital.
Here, the technicians from Hoa Vang Hospital (at 8:45 am) and the CDC technician (at 9:00 am) took a sample from the patient for testing again to send to the CDC for testing.
Both samples were negative for SARS-CoV-2 by the RT-PCR method.
Before that, from June 29 to July 5, the patient used to be treated at Danang Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Hospital.
From July 6.7 to 12, the patient was treated in the geriatric department of Da Nang Hospital.
From 13.7 to 13.8, the patient was discharged from the hospital to go home. Due to poor health and atrophy of his leg muscles, Mr. S. simply stayed home, did not go anywhere or have contact with anyone outside of his family.
From August 14 to 18, the patient was hospitalized at C Da Nang Hospital. During this time, Hospital C collected oropharyngeal fluid on August 14 and sent it to the Da Nang Center for Disease Control (CDC) for analysis and had negative results for SARS-CoV-2.
On the afternoon of August 18 to August 29, the patient returned from the hospital to stay at home until he was reinstated on September 5.
4 members of the patient’s family may have had SARS-CoV-2 infection
However, remarkable information for this case was in the afternoon of May 5, the patient continued to be sampled for the antibody test by the rapid test method and by the Mac Elisa method, the results were positive for antibodies.
This means that the patient’s body was previously infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but now the test results show that the patient is negative for SARS-CoV-2.
With regard to Mr. S.’s family, on September 5, Da Nang C Hospital took samples from the patient’s wife and brother to perform a rapid antibody test and obtain a positive result.
In particular, the PCR test using the RT-PCR method of Mr. S.’s wife at 5.9 showed negative results. The patient’s brother who had been tested by PCR on August 15 showed negative results.
The patient’s daughter is a teacher, the examiner was tested before the high school exam, the CDC tested 1.9 by RT-PCR method, the results were negative.
The son-in-law and the two grandsons from the same household rarely interact with the patient.
When there was information about the patient testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 at Hospital C, all 6 were transferred to medical isolation at Ngu Hanh Son District Medical Center.
On the afternoon of September 6, the patient’s brother, wife, and daughter’s antibody test results were positive for Mac Elisa, meaning they had been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the past.
The results of the antigen test using the RT-PCR method of 6 family members, the sister-in-law of 1 patient, and 3 other related individuals were negative for SARS-CoV-2.
Based on the previous test results, Da Nang Health Department said that the test result is positive for antibodies, that is, the patient has been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the past.
“This is the case when it is necessary to have more scientific basis and professional opinion. Da Nang City Health Department will inform the Ministry of Health to seek professional guidance and direction to handle this case.
