The 61-year-old nun patient, who ate bread with pate Minh Chay, was poisoned and hospitalized for treatment.

On the morning of September 5, Dr. Tran Cong An, Director of Vinh Duc General Hospital, Dien Ban City, said he was treating a woman with symptoms of shortness of breath, blurred vision, double vision, sore throat , difficulty to swallow. . She was initially diagnosed with food poisoning due to botulinum toxin poisoning from the Minh Chay pate.

The epidemiological investigation determined, on August 31, that the patient was a monk at a temple in Dien Phuong Commune, Dien Ban City, eating Minh Chay pate with bread. On September 4 she was hospitalized with symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, blurred vision, double vision, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness.

“Currently, the nun’s health is fine, there is no serious development. She has only mild neurological signs,” said Mr. An.

Before that, in the first two days of September, the Vinh Duc General Hospital received three patients, two women and one man, who were poisoned after eating Minh Chay pate with bread.

On the afternoon of September 3, the Quang Nam Department of Hygiene and Food Safety went to work with the hospital and took samples for testing. The Quang Nam Health Department suggests to districts, towns and cities to urgently handle products that do not guarantee food safety.

Based on the official dispatch of the Department of Food Safety on urgent handling of unsafe products, the Department of Health requires localities to direct functional agencies to inspect and supervise the market. The agency also advises people to stop using and seal the products immediately and to keep a separate area.

On August 29, the Food Safety Office of the Ministry of Health urgently warned that the Minh Chay pate product was contaminated with botulinum bacteria that poison the muscles, causing muscle paralysis and respiratory failure. Products produced by the new Hanoi-based Lifestyle Company are only available online. The Department of Food Safety recalled products and advised users not to eat; If there are unusual symptoms after eating, they should be hospitalized immediately. Ho Chi Minh City identified 1,290 people who bought products from this company, almost 1,200 in Hanoi, but only 10% of the products were recovered.

The number of poisoned people hospitalized so far is 15, of which 9 cases are being treated at Cho Ray Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City; two cases in Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi and four cases in Vinh Duc General Hospital, Quang Nam. Most of the patients are hospitalized late, the critical condition requires prolonged continuous mechanical ventilation. Botulinum intoxication status in the last 30 years has not appeared in Vietnam, so there is no serum or special medicine, it must be ordered from abroad, the patient has to change the plasma many times.
