The WHO hopes that China will invite them to participate in nCoV animal research.
“The WHO is ready to cooperate with international partners if the Chinese government invites it to participate in animal research,” WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said in an email to May 1 on May 1. AFP.
He said the WHO knew that some research was being done in China “to better understand the origin of the epidemic,” but added that “the WHO is not involved in studies in China.”
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus led a delegation to China in late January, meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to learn more about the country’s response. An international team of scientists traveled to China in February to investigate the situation, including experts from Germany, Japan, South Korea, Nigeria, Russia, Singapore, and the United States.
But when investigations into the origin of the virus accelerated in China, the WHO was not involved in these studies, the spokesman said. Ongoing investigations are expected to examine “symptomatic cases of infected people in and around Wuhan in late 2019, taking environmental samples from markets and farms in areas where cases were reported. The first infection and detailed records of the origin and type of animals wild, cattle raised for sale in these markets, “Jasarevic said.
“WHO will continue to work with medical and veterinary experts, countries and other partners to identify gaps and prioritize research to control Covid-19, including traceability. Of viruses in China,” said Jasarevic.
Most scientists believe that nCoV originated from bats, which spread from animals to humans at the wildlife market in Wuhan late last year. However, Trump and US officials are pressing for the nCoV hypothesis that leaked from Wuhan’s lab. American intelligence is considering this hypothesis, although the virus “is not man-made.”
The WHO has faced harsh criticism from Trump. Earlier this month, he suspended funding for the WHO after accusing the organization of reducing the severity of the epidemic and Chinese bias.
Covid-19 appeared in 210 countries and territories, causing more than 3.3 million infected people, more than 234,000 people died, and approximately one million people recovered.
