At a press conference on 1.9 with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in Berlin, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that the official visit to Taiwan of the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic, Milos Vystrcil, had crossed the red line, according to Reuters. It is unclear what steps China will take in response to this.
Mr. Vystrcil began his trip to Taiwan on August 30 to seek business cooperation and met with Taiwanese leaders. On August 31, Wang Yi announced that China would cost Vystrcil a heavy price for violating the “one China” principle.
In response, the Czech Republic summoned the Chinese ambassador to this country to react and demand an explanation of the statement that was beyond the limits of Mr. Wang.
Mr. Vystrcil emphasized that the Czech Republic “has good relations with all countries”, and stated that the visit was not aimed at political confrontation with any of the parties.
However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hoa Xuan Oanh stated on September 1 that Beijing strongly condemned the visit and accused Vystrcil of publicly supporting separatism and interfering in China’s internal affairs.
