The number of poisoned Minh Chay pâté products recovered only reached less than 10%. This is a particularly dangerous case, if people have exhausted it, the consequences are very unpredictable.
Just recovered less than 10%
On the afternoon of September 1, the Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Management Board cooperated with the Hospital Hospital for Tropical Diseases to hold a press conference to report on the cases and the situation of handling botulinum poisoning products. from Alternative Living Two-member Company Limited.
Associate Professor Pham Khanh Phong Lan, head of the Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Management Board, said that as of August 28, just after instructions from the Department of Food Safety, the board handled, deployed, withdrew and declared urgently passed to the people. In fact, this is a high-end product line priced in the hundreds of thousands of VND per box, so the risk of spread and consumption in Ho Chi Minh City has the highest customer segment.
Most of the products are sold online. Basically, Ban has captured information on the number of people in the area who bought the product. Consequently, in the city, there were 1,290 people who bought 1,559 Minh Chay pâté box products, and Prohibition called on related units to urgently handle, check, propagate so that people do not use and collect product recovery.
Currently, Ban has contacted 1,101 people, the rest have yet to be contacted for many different reasons. So far, only 103 boxes of Minh Chay pate have been recovered, less than 10% of the amount sold online. The reality of verification shows that many people buy but the newspapers no longer have products, some buy to resell, some buy to give to others. A case in District 5 bought 3 boxes and brought 2 boxes to the nun in a pagoda in Ba Ria – Vung Tau. This is a very high risk, the Ban has notified the province of Vung Tau warning of the risk of taking the necessary measures to recover.
In addition to people who are very cooperative, bringing products to the Board for delivery, many people do not cooperate because they want to stay as evidence to sue the company or they do not want to be bothered, they do not want to be reported to the press. … Ban continues to check the shops and small outlets in the area to inspect the vegetarian food stores.
The Board continues to ask the community to take proactive measures to protect health, coordinating with the authorities in the recall. Those who have purchased the product should keep it separate from other products and notify the authorities for the recall.
“We are not sure if the product was only contaminated with botulinum in a single batch. This incident is particularly dangerous, so far it is not known exactly how many people used it. Recalls are still very difficult. Where are about 1,400 boxes? Yes people have eaten it all, it is too dangerous. We need to have a drastic response to prevent it, not to be able to repeat it in the future, “said Associate Professor Lan.
Having antibodies is also difficult to treat
Dr. Nguyen Van Hao, Head of the Department of Adult Ambulance and Positive Resuscitation, Hospital for Tropical Diseases, HCMC, said that so far, 9 cases have been registered in the city, all from other provinces and cities include 6 cases in Cho Ray, 2 cases in Nhiet Doi, 1 case in Popular Hospital 115. The patients were hospitalized in serious condition.
Entering the body, the botulinum toxin will attack the patient’s nervous system, causing two-sided paralysis, including collapse of the eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, paralysis gradually moves up and down the body. The onset of all cases had general symptoms, one day after eating, the patient presented vomiting (possibly transient), but without fever.
Treatment for botulinum poisoning cases, until now, there are anti-toxin serums in the world, but the price is very expensive, Vietnam has not imported it for a long time. However, effective use of serum should be used within the first 3 days of illness onset. This is a dangerous toxin, it can be fatal, the death rate is about 20%.
Serious cases without serum will be treated symptomatically, waiting for the body to recover, but it will take a long time. Patients who must be ventilated in one setting will face many dangerous complications during their treatment.
Associate Professor Pham Khanh Phong Lan noted that those who used the product should go to the nearest medical center for a medical check-up. People do not voluntarily destroy or dispose of the product due to the risk of spreading pathogens or people in difficult circumstances will pick up the product for use and the consequences will be highly unpredictable.
