The Czech foreign minister said he would summon the Chinese ambassador after Beijing warned that the president of the Czech Senate would pay a high price for his visit to Taiwan.

Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek said on Aug. 31 that although the Czech government does not support Senate President Milos Vystrcil’s visit to Taiwan, it still needs an explanation for China’s Foreign Minister’s comments. Wang Yi and will convene the Chinese ambassador to the Czech Republic to respond to this matter.
“I hope the Chinese side will explain those comments to us. The trip, of course, affected our relations with China, but I think things have gone too far, “the Czech chancellor told reporters.
The statement by the head of the Czech Foreign Ministry came after the Chinese foreign minister criticized the president of the Czech Senate for violating the one-China principle when he was making an official visit to Taiwan.
“We will force him to pay a high price for his superficial behavior and his political opportunism,” Vuong said in Germany on Aug. 31 during a trip to five European countries.
The flight carrying Mr. Vystrcil and the 90-person delegation landed at Taipei International Airport on the morning of August 30. This is the highest-level visit by Czech government officials to Taiwan in the history of bilateral relations.

According to Foreign Minister Wang Yi, defying the one-China principle amounts to “becoming the enemy of 1.4 billion Chinese.” Wang also said that the Chinese government and people will not tolerate “open provocation” by the president of the Czech Senate and the anti-China forces behind Vystrcil.
“We are a free country that seeks good relations with all countries and I believe that this incident will continue to occur in the future despite the statement of the Foreign Minister (China). I repeat that the visit is not intended to politically confront anyone, “said the Czech Chancellor.
Relations between the Czech Republic and China have been strained after the city of Prague signed a cooperation agreement with Taipei earlier this year. In a document sent by the Chinese embassy to the Czech presidential office in January, Beijing warned that Czech companies operating in mainland China would suffer losses if the Czech foreign minister visited Taiwan.
