In an interview with the TASS news agency on August 27, Mr. Renat Mistakhov, CEO of Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation (Tatarstan, Russia) said that this group introduced two models of warships with twice the number of missiles carried. (Buyan missile ship) to 3 times (battleship Gepard).

These warships proved powerful during the war in Syria, according to Mistakhov.

Mistakhov said the Russian Navy was impressed with the Project 21631 small missile ships (displaced 900 tons) that fought in Syria when they launched Kalibr cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea at their positions. Organization of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. However, the number of missiles these ships carry is too small, only 8.

Building on that fact, Ak Bars will upgrade Project 21631’s small Buyan-class missile boat to double the number of missiles, to 16, or equip up to 2 vertical launch systems (each system is 8 fire). Thus, the ship’s displacement will increase to 1,300 – 1,500 tons. According to Mr. Mistakhov, the greater the amount of water that is displaced, the easier the ship will be to operate in the marine environment.

The second model to improve is the Project 11661 (Gepard) class. This class of ships of the Russian Navy currently has 2 ships by the Shipyard called Gorky Ak Bars in Zelenodolsk (CH Tatarstan), it is Dagestan and Tatarstan. In which Dagestan participated in launching Kalibr missiles from the Caspian Sea at a distance of more than 1,500 km flying through Iranian and Iraqi airspace at the ISIS base in Syria in late 2015.

Mistakhov also said that with the Gepard warship he would triple the number of current Kalibr missiles from eight to three, or 24. Consequently, the hull will remain the same, but will mount 2 vertical missile launchers, each with 8 capsules, in the middle of the helmet just behind the control compartment. The remaining missiles will be placed in the foreground near the bow.

The Gepard model introduced will bring 24 rockets, the body is based on the Gepard 3.9 class with torpedoes, equipped with two vertical missile launchers carrying Kalibr missiles (16 balls), the front has no missiles. 3rd with artillery still in place – Palma short-range anti-aircraft missiles

With a displacement of up to 2,200 tonnes, the Gepard is suitable to arm itself with up to 24 Kalibr missiles, Mistakhov said, saying that the Russian navy is particularly interested in this new design.

The Ak Bars booth at Army Forum 2020 showcased 2 Gepard 3.9 exported ship models that were provided to the Vietnam Navy (1 type without torpedoes and 1 with torpedoes), with 1 model page and two Kalibr missile launchers (16 shots).

The Gepard 3.9 class of Project 11661 was exported by Russia to Vietnam with 4 ships, including Dinh Tien Hoang, Ly Thai To, Tran Hung Dao and Quang Trung. Gepard 3.9 export ships are only equipped with 8 Uran-E anti-ship missiles (range of about 130 km), anti-aircraft melee artillery, 76 mm gunboats and submarine hunting torpedoes (torpedoes were only available in 2 Tran Hung Dao and Quang Trung).

Last year, it was reported that Vietnam was interested in ordering two more Gepard 3.9, but according to RealTime (Russia) on January 17, Renat Mistakhov, CEO of Ak Bars Shipbuilding Group, said he is booking the construction of a couple of ships. Gepard 3.9 for the Vietnamese Navy has yet to budge.

Many opinions suggest that Vietnam wants the Gepard to have stronger firepower than the four purchased, plus the ship’s design is not modern (based on the model 11661 from the 1990s).

However, with the Gepard class equipped with up to 3 vertical missile launchers, carrying 24 rockets, this might be a good suggestion.
