Specifically, according to the CNA news agency today, Kyodo News announced that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is planning to organize a large-scale landing exercise near Hainan province with the aforementioned scenario. Dong Sa is strategically important to Beijing because Chinese warships must travel through the islands when traveling from Hainan to the Pacific, according to Kyodo News.

In response to information from Kyodo News, Maj. Gen. Lam Van Hoang, head of the Planning and Action Office of the Taiwan Defense Authority (MND), said at a press conference today that the agency was monitoring the movement of “hostile forces” through surveillance and intelligence gathering, according to the CNA.

Mr. Lam made it clear that the MND has a plan to deal with unexpected situations in the South China Sea and will continue to strengthen its readiness for protection and combat in the Dong Sa archipelago. On the other hand, Lam blatantly said that this capacity would still be strengthened on Ba Binh Island, on the Spratly Islands belonging to the Vietnamese sovereignty but controlled by Taiwan.
