China’s move to block a city near North Korea due to an increase in Covid-19 infection has raised questions about the possibility of an outbreak in North Korea.

Specifically, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on May 10 that the government banned all non-essential means of transportation and closed residential areas and villages in Thu Lan City, Cat. Lam Province. Before, students were allowed to return to school, but now they were forced to study at home. Jilin Province announced that the city had raised its alert level from medium to high.
On May 9, Jilin Province reported a total of 105 Covid-19 cases in the community and 19 cases abroad. According to local health officials, including 11 new cases in Thu Lan City.
North Korea closed its border with China in January and has not confirmed any Covid-19 cases. However, the United States Army doubts this and believes that the Kim Jong-un administration has received help from other countries to combat the epidemic.
Over the weekend, Xinhua said that Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his willingness to help North Korea fight the pandemic by responding to Kim’s message, but did not elaborate.
According to NK News, China has shipped a series of Covid-19 test kits to its neighbors. In addition to aid organizations that have brought medical supplies to North Korea, Russia has offered to help.
Last week, Kim sent his first official message to China since he reappeared after nearly three weeks of absence, sparking speculation about the North Korean leader’s health.
Kim praised President Xi for the “success” in controlling the pandemic, saying the Chinese leader had “seized the opportunity to win the unprecedented fight against the pandemic.” North Korean media reported on May 10 that Kim also received a message requesting cooperation from Xi to combat the epidemic.
In addition, North Korea sent a congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the anniversary of the end of World War II and wished Putin a victory in the epidemic.
Although little is known about North Korea’s anti-Covid-19 effort, some signs have emerged in recent months. North Korea reported that more than 5,400 people were removed from quarantine in March. According to NK News, consumers in Pyongyang were also quick to accumulate food in late April due to strict anti-epidemic measures.
Unlike the heavily militarized border area with South Korea, the 1,420-kilometer border between North Korea and China is flourishing. To date, the two largest provinces bordering North Korea in China, Liaoning and Jilin, have recorded nearly 300 cases of Covid-19.
