According to the images taken by the patient’s relatives, the crab that the patient eats is scientifically known as Zosimus aeneus (devil’s face crab). The devil’s face often inhabits coral reefs from South Africa to the island of Hawaii. In Vietnam, this species is often found in waters from Da Nang to Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Both substances are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract in 5-15 minutes, the maximum concentration reaches after 20 minutes and is mainly excreted in the urine. Eating just 0.5 grams of this crab meat can kill an adult.
“The most common symptom of devil face poisoning are signs of the nervous system, such as numbness in the extremities, numbness in the tongue, and nausea. Poisoned people quickly develop severe systemic symptoms, respiratory paralysis causing respiratory failure, and death. Currently, there is no specific antidote for saxitonin toxin on the devil’s face, ”said Dr. Phuoc.
