Patient 91’s lungs solidified, mechanical ventilation was ineffective, now completely dependent on ECMO. Experts are considering lung transplantation to save patients.
On May 10, Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Disease Hospital, said the patient’s prognosis was still very severe.
Currently, British pilots infected with Covid-19 must undergo trachea, run ECMO, and dialysis. He had to take antibiotics, antifungals, and pleural drainage.
On the condition that both lungs freeze for a long time, doctors fear that the lungs will become an outbreak for bacteria to grow strongly in the patient’s body. Therefore, the use of breathing apparatus is no longer effective, currently it is completely dependent on the heart and artificial lungs (ECMO).

According to professional advice, the patient’s immune system overreacted when it attacked the SARS-CoV-2 virus, causing the body to release more cytokines against the body itself, causing internal effects.
This is a medical phenomenon called cytokine release syndrome or cytokine storm, but the cause cannot be explained.
Because the patient was resistant to all coagulant medications used in the country, the Ministry of Health had to order rare medications from abroad to treat this male patient.
This morning, the Ministry of Health, Cho Ray Hospital and Viet Duc Hospital held a consultation on the topic of lung transplantation for patients.
