The WHO director-general said the organization was fully focused on saving lives and preventing pandemics, after Trump cut the WHO budget.
“There is no time to lose. The only focus of the WHO is to support everyone to save lives and prevent Covid-19,” wrote WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Twitter today.
Tedros also published on WHO’s updated strategies to deal with epidemics on April 14. This strategy “guides how to respond at the national and local levels, including practical guidance appropriate to the local context,” he wrote.
“One of the main things we learned in recent months about Covid-19 is that the faster we detect, test, quarantine, and treat infected people, the more difficult the virus is to spread.” Tedros said. “This principle will save many lives and minimize the economic impact of a pandemic.”
On April 14, Trump decided to suspend funding and “conduct a review to clarify WHO’s role in making the world a serious mistake in dealing with Covid-19 and masking the spread of nCoV.” The White House chief said the WHO was not transparent about Covid-19 and that Washington would discuss “how to use the money that should be in the hands of the WHO.”
Trump’s move has faced opposition from the United Nations, Russia, China, the European Union, the African Union and billionaire Bill Gates, a leading WHO advocate through his charitable foundation. Beijing said Washington “undermined international cooperation against the disease,” while Russia “selfishly” criticized the United States.
The United States is the largest contributor to the WHO with more than $ 400 million in 2019. Meanwhile, China, the world’s second largest economy, is not among the top donors. According to NPRThe next three largest donors are the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the GAVI Alliance, and the United Kingdom.
Covid-19 appeared in 210 countries and territories, causing more than two million infections, nearly 129,000 deaths, and more than 492,000 recoveries.
