AmericaThe Rochester Police Department suspended work, investigating seven officers involved in the color case. Daniel Prude died after a hood was put on him.
“Daniel Prude was killed by the mistakes of the police department, the mental health system, society and himself. I was overwhelmed by grief, as well as anger at myself for the mistakes that led to me. His death,” Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren said at a press conference Sept. 3, after announcing the decision to suspend seven police officers involved in the incident.
Warren said he was unaware of the situation that led to Prude’s death until August and condemned the young man’s death as an act of racism. “I do not reject and I will be responsible, I ask for justice for this incident,” he added.
Rochester City Sheriff La’Ron Singletary said an internal inspection was underway and the police department also opened a criminal investigation into Prude’s death, but did not elaborate.
The attorney for the Prude family has yet to comment on the information.
Daniel Prude, a naked colored man, ran through the streets of Rochester, western New York, on the night of March 23 before being covered by a police hat and pressing his face against the pavement for two minutes. Prude was taken to the hospital and died seven days later when a relative decided to turn off the life support device.
Prude’s death went unnoticed until the man’s family held a press conference on September 2 and released a video taken from the police officer’s camera, along with his report. through the request for publication of records.
Video released at the press conference showed that Prude complied with the police request to lie on the ground and put her hands behind the policeman’s back. Prude was agitated and screamed when the police let him sit on the sidewalk as the snow fell slightly. Officers grabbed the white hood that was meant to prevent saliva on Prude’s head because New York was in the early stages of the Covid-19 outbreak. Prude asked the officer to remove his hood.
One officer pressed Prude’s head against the sidewalk with both hands and said “no spit” when the man stopped screaming and began to moan. Another man pressed his knee against Prude’s back. The cops showed concern when saliva dripped from Prude’s mouth. “Are you vomiting?” Said an officer.
Prude stopped moving and fell silent. One officer recalled that the man had been naked on the street for a long time, while another said that “it seems quite cold.” The policeman held Prude’s head against the ground for more than two minutes. Medics arrived at Prude’s CPR scene before taking the man to the ambulance.
Forensic experts concluded that Prude’s death was “a murder due to complications from suffocation during containment.” Examination reports showed that delirium and acute phencyclidine poisoning were contributing factors in Prude’s death.
Rochester stopped investigating Prude’s death after New York State Attorney Letitia James launched a private investigation in April. Under New York law, the state judicial office will investigate cases without weapons. died when she was arrested by the police, rather than the local authorities. Attorney General James said the investigation is ongoing.
An officer involved in the arrest said they put a hat on Prude’s head because the man was constantly spitting on them and officers were concerned about the nCoV infection. However, activists still demanded the prosecution of murder charges against people linked to Prude’s death and to suspend his work while they investigate authorities.
