Five people died after a fire at the Covid-19 patient hospital in Saint Petersburg. Saint Petersburg, the cause may be a short circuit fan.
Emergency services are notified of a major fire at Saint George’s Hospital in the Vyborg district of Saint Petersburg. St. Petersburg, where patients treat Covid-19, at approximately 6:30 today (10:30 Hanoi time). The smoke comes from the sixth floor of the building.
Firefighters are deployed on the scene and the fire is controlled later. A spokesman for Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said five people who died were victims of Covid-19 who were receiving mechanical ventilation.
About 150 patients and hospital staff were evacuated to a safe place. Preliminary investigations show that the cause of the fire may be an electric shock.
A source said the fire broke out in one of the fans. “The fans are running at full capacity. Preliminary data indicates that one of the fans was overloaded and caught fire, causing a fire,” the source explained.
The hospital, which has nearly 5,500 beds, was designated a treatment site for patients with Covid-19 after an outbreak in Russia. According to local media, a response team was called to the hospital on May 1 to handle the chemical leak on the third floor.
On May 9, a fire also broke out at a hospital treating nCoV-infected patients in the northwest capital of Moscow, killing one person. All patients were transferred to other hospitals to continue treatment. The cause of the fire is believed to be a malfunction in a fan.
A day later, another fire broke out inside a private nursing home in the northwestern city of Krasnogorsk, killing 10 people in bed. The cause of the tragedy is said to be short-circuited.
Covid-19 has appeared in 212 countries and territories, causing more than 4.2 million infections and more than 287,000 deaths. Currently, Russia registers more than 232,000 infections and more than 2,100 deaths, making it the third largest epidemic in the world.
