At 9:20 am on October 11, the fishermen trapped in the Vietship 01 freighter were successfully rescued by helicopters and water commandos and brought ashore.
Mr. Dang Van Nghi, 33, who lives in Da Loc Commune, Hau Loc District, Thanh Hoa Province, was one of the last 6 crew members of the Vietship 01 ship that was taken off the ship in danger from the rescue helicopter. After reaching land, he and his crew received first aid and were then taken directly to the Quang Tri Province General Hospital for treatment.
Only 33 years old, young and strong, but his face was dry after four days of starvation at sea. Speaking of almost 70 hours of fighting with the waves at sea, he still sheds tears, as if counting every moment that he has just lived.
Living in … spirit
Swearing that his throat was hoarse after days of being submerged in the cold rain and wind, Mr. Nghi said that his freighter had experienced a strong vortex, causing it to drift towards the zero float four days ago.
After hitting a rocky beach, the boat jumped out and got stuck in a position a few hundred meters from shore. The waves and winds rushed, and the people on the train tried to hold onto the bars, then jumped up and looked toward the shore.
“Seeing everything on the shoreline very clearly, no one on board can imagine the days when he lived in extreme conditions after that,” Nghi said.
After a few dozen minutes, the people on the train began to calm down. The more I think, the colder.
The trapped ship is located right next to the rocky beach of the embankment system in the seaport. The waves are getting higher. The floodwaters that came out of the sea gate were continually pouring out. The risk of the ship submerging gradually increased every minute. But everyone is trying to calm down waiting for rescue.
Near the end of the first day, darkness comes. It was still raining and the wind was fighting incessantly. Rescue plans cannot be implemented due to the waves. It was then that the crew on board began to see hunger and thirst in the surroundings.
Mr. Nghi said that the ship was suddenly washed away, so there was no food or water on board. As a cargo ship, the cabin area is very small. Twelve crew members experienced wet head-to-toe winds.
“There is no food. There is no water to drink. It is cold. Hungry. The wind is coming, you have to clench your teeth and strain to fight,” Mr. Nghi still shuddered at the memory.
The second day at sea, everyone was exhausted from hunger and cold. The two strongest men jumped into the ocean to swim when rescuers reached shore. The luckier these two are, the more exhausted the remaining 10 people on board are.
After a day and a night, no one has the strength to believe that he can swim through waves up to several meters high. They all know how to hold on to the iron bars of the train and wait.
On the train, the highest place is the chimney. Amid the waves, the ship was sinking more and more. The people on the train struggled to climb to the position of the fireplace to see the shore. Seeing the shore is seeing hope.
At dusk on the second day, two crew members, Nguyen Duy Dong and Nguyen Van Huy, were suddenly thrown into the sea by the waves. The people on board understood that this risk could reach anyone who still remained.
The second night at sea was endless. Hunger, thirst and cold touch the heart. Although they sometimes shudder at the worst-case scenario, the brothers on the train try to encourage each other to give it a try.
“Very hungry, very thirsty, but we just encouraged each other to endure. In those days, we only knew how to live with spirit. Thanks to spirit, we passed by to wait until we were saved,” said Mr. Nghi.

Look to the shore for hope
The third day at sea with these crewmembers is the day of greatest consternation. Not only because of hunger and thirst, but because rescue efforts from the shore have not been effective.
On the morning of the third day, a fishing boat carrying 4 fishermen crossed the waves and approached the damaged boat to rescue it, but when it approached the fishing boat, it sank. A fisherman can swim on land. 3 fishermen were stranded on the Vietship 01 boat with the crew.
Still nothing to eat, nothing to drink, nothing warm to withstand the cold winds.
Mr. Nghi said that sitting in a cabin near the fireplace was very dangerous. The position of the fireplace is high, the waves roll in, and the person sitting inside is lifted, no one knows where to fly. But hungry and cold, and drenched in rain for several days in a row, the crew members took turns getting into the cockpit and sitting down and helping cool off.
Small cabin, not enough room for everyone to sit, so they have to change.
At noon on the third day, people gathered in large numbers on the shore to monitor the rescue. Mr. Nghi said that he had tears in his eyes when he saw this scene, but he did not know why. “Perhaps it is an image of hope. I see them very close to me. The more I believe they will have a way to save me.”
So it was dark when the crew on board were most obsessed.
Mr. Tran Xuan Cuong, one of the four fishermen on the lifeboat, came to rescue the injured crew members on the Vietship 01 ship and also got stuck with the crew one day and one night, saying that it was not easy to tell on this ship. to spend the days and nights there.
Mr. Cuong was trapped on the train from October 10-11. One night on board was enough to impregnate what the crew had just been through. Especially the shelter from the dark.
“All of a sudden, everything went black. The people on the train can hardly be seen. Everyone wants to be bright. The light at that moment means hope. Even if I’m hungry, it’s cold, but I still want to see the people inside. If you still see people on the shore, you still hope to be saved, “Cuong said.

Receiving goods from helicopters without knowing there is food
On the night of October 10, helicopters were present at the accidental spot and dropped supplies including ropes, buoys, and food and drinking water for those on board. However, according to Mr. Nghi, the people on board will not know that there is food in the package until tomorrow morning.
When the food and water were discovered, the people on the train burst into tears and had a quick snack. Fast enough to eat to survive and feel nothing else.
“When the plane dropped the cargo, we thought there were only buoys and ropes, so we had to split the rope on the ship. Until tomorrow morning, we will know that there is food and water there,” Nghi said.
