Severe abdominal pain due to intestinal perforation and multi-organ damage, but due to difficult circumstances, Ms H. (15, living in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City) was not immediately hospitalized for treatment.

Dr Du Tan Quy, Deputy Director of the Department of Infections – Neurology, Children’s Hospital 1 (Ho Chi Minh City) said that a CBH patient (15 years old, living in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City) died of intestinal tuberculosis.

Ms H. has multiple organ damage, so she cannot survive, although the doctors are dedicated to it. Deaths from intestinal tuberculosis due to complications from tuberculosis bacteria such as H. are very rare.

Before that, on October 11, Ms. H. was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain and was unable to walk.

In the hospital, the doctor performed tests, an abdominal ultrasound and discovered intestinal obstruction, perforation, for which he indicated urgent surgery to cut the perforated and necrotic intestine.

Doctors continued to take chest X-rays and perform tests. The results showed that he had pneumonia and tuberculosis bacteria that caused organ damage, including peritoneal tuberculosis, tuberculosis, pulmonary tuberculosis.

Doctors have tried anti-infection drugs because H. has septicemia but it does not go away, the progress of the disease is getting worse. On October 14, the patient died.

According to Dr. Quy, the tuberculosis bacteria that cause intestinal tuberculosis is rare, but it mainly causes lung damage such as tuberculosis. When the patient has intestinal tuberculosis, the tuberculosis bacteria enter the respiratory tract into the localized intestine, causing intestinal damage.

Dr. Quy said that, when suffering from intestinal tuberculosis, there will be some symptoms such as mild fever in the afternoon, abdominal pain, weight loss, … In the initial stage, the patient may present signs of cough, loss of appetite. The disease can be completely cured with an anti-TB treatment if it is caught early.

However, because the patient was hospitalized late, the tuberculosis germs attacked, causing damage to multiple organs, causing intestinal perforation and death.

Currently, the number of people infected with tuberculosis has decreased significantly, but it still appears in many poor people due to poor economic conditions, living in cramped environments, having no tuberculosis vaccines or ineffective vaccines. In the case of Mr. H., a family member does not remember the vaccination history and the route of vaccination against tuberculosis is difficult to identify.

H.’s mother said that 1 month ago she complained of abdominal pain, vomiting and did not want to eat. About 1 month, H. lost 5 kg. However, due to difficult circumstances, the family does not have enough money for their children to see the doctor. Until H. complained of severe pain, he was admitted to the emergency room.

Before this death, Dr. Quy warned people to be vigilant for TB germs, especially in cases where they did not receive a TB vaccine or in some cases were vaccinated but were not effective.
