US Coronavirus: More than 97,000 children test positive for Covid-19 in the last two weeks of July, report says

The report, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, said in those two weeks there was a 40% increase in child deaths in the states and cities studied.

The age range for children varies by state, with some defining children as just those up to the age of 14 and one state – Alabama – pushing the limit to 24.

The compiled data comes during school hours as health officials try to understand the effects of the virus on children and the role of young people play in their distribution. Some schools started welcoming people back to class and others had to adjust their rescheduling plans in response to infections.
In one Georgian high school that made headlines after a photo of a crowded schoolhouse went viral, nine coronavirus cases were reported, according to a letter from the principal. Six of those cases were students and three were staff members, the letter said.
While some U.S. leaders – including the president – have said the virus does not pose a major risk to children, a recent study suggests that older children may transmit the virus just as much as adults. Another study said that children younger than 5 carry a higher viral load then adults, raising even more questions about their role in transmission.
Black and Spanish children are more severely affected by coronavirus, research shows
At least 86 children have died since May, according to the new report. Last week, a 7-year-old boy with no circumstances became the youngest coronavirus victim in Georgia. In Florida, two teenagers died earlier this month, bringing the state the cause of death of minors to seven.
And black and Hispanic children are more severely affected with higher rates of infections, hospitalizations and coronavirus-related complications, recently published research studies.

State and local officials have linked the resistance in cases to large group meetings and more infections among younger people.

Dr. Anthony Fauci urged young people last week to listen to guidelines, and said during a webinar with the Alliance for Health Policy, “do not be the weak link in the chain.”

“That’s the message we need to get to young people,” he said. “Obviously they do nothing deliberate and evil, but what they do is by accident – they propagate the outbreak.”

60 violations in bars and restaurants

Despite persistent warnings, it is still business as usual in some parts of the country.

Many Americans are still moving as much as before the pandemic, according to Drs. Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

“If you look at the mobility data collected from mobile phones in many parts of the country, we are almost back to pre-Covid levels of mobility, so we are just not as careful as other people in other countries, “Murray told CNN earlier.

In other places, failure to follow safety precautions has had consequences.
