Has made another deal with a large theater chain to shorten the universal theatrical window from three months to 17 days.
On Friday, the company announced it had reached a multilateral agreement with Canada’s largest movie theater chain Cineplex to allow three full weekends of theatrical exclusivity before allowing it to launch on the premium video on-demand platform.
The deal also states that if a title grossed $ 50 million or more in its opening week, the film will run in theaters exclusively for at least five full weekends, or 31 days, before it becomes available on PVOD. The full terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“The increase in digital, streaming and cord cutting has given a boost to the audience segment, as well as the unprecedented issue that our industry is currently facing. Said in a statement from the filming entertainment group.
Universal A.M.C. And Cinemark, U.S. No. does similar deals with top exhibitors and is the only major studio to reach such agreements with exhibitors.
There are less than 600 movie theaters in Canada, of which 165 are from Cineplex. The average of Canadian office fees is included in the North American telly, which is used by the industry to determine its success during the film’s opening and during the full run in theaters.
Universal plans five theatrical releases for the remaining two months of 2020. “The Crows: A New Age” is pending Thanksgiving and the company has four titles in December: “Half Brothers,” “All My Life,” “News of the News of the World,” and “Promising Young Women.”
