United States Reports More Than 70,000 New Coronavirus Infections For Second Consecutive Day

The United States reported 71,558 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, making it the second consecutive day that the nation saw more than 70,000 new infections, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

As of Saturday, the 7-day average has seen an 18.34% increase in new cases compared to a week ago.

The United States has led the world in reported cases totaling 3.66 million in total since Covid-19 hit. To date, 139,480 deaths from the virus have been reported in the United States, the majority of deaths from any nation in the world.

Nineteen states hit their own records on average daily new cases, and most saw an increase of more than 25%. As almost all 50 states see increases in new cases, hospitalizations are growing in 33 states with 14 states reaching record levels in average current hospitalizations.

Florida reported 10,292 new cases and 90 more deaths on Saturday, according to data from the state health department. Twelve percent of Florida residents tested positive for the virus on Friday, below a recent high of 18%.

Texas reported 10,256 new cases, according to its health department. More than 17% of Texans tested positive for the virus as of Thursday.

Texas and Florida are the main centers of the coronavirus outbreak in the US The virus has emerged since the spring after Sunbelt states began to quickly reopen their economies after brief blockades. Last Sunday, Florida reported more than 15,000 new cases, more than New York at its peak in April.

The United States reached a national record on Thursday, with 77,255 new cases. On Friday, White House health adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci praised New York for its management of the coronavirus pandemic, amid debate in the U.S.

New York, once the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States, has cut new daily infections from more than 10,000 at its peak to 776 later this week. New York City is slated to enter Phase 4 on Monday, allowing for outdoor activities like zoos, outdoor movies, and gardens.

Governor Andrew Cuomo implemented one of the strictest blockades in the country. Bars and indoor dining rooms have yet to reopen in New York City as a precaution. Governors in critical states like Arizona, Florida, Texas, and Georgia have been reluctant to implement strict measures of social distancing.
